Default Dual Snorkel air cleaner question

On the bottom of the dual snorkel air cleaner there is a large hose and fitting. Where does that hose go and who sells that fitting?

It goes to the DS exhaust manifold shield. It's a flexible tube. The steel shield is retained by two of the head bolts that have studs on top.

As far as I know it's just a foil covered paper like tube that attached to the elbow you see on the air cleaner on one end and the manifold on the other. They're just held on with band clamps. Ames should have all of it.

Must have been a Chevy owner...

As mentioned by UJ above, not Pontiac factory. It's how BB Chevys attach the breather tube.

What are the fittings circled? I don't have a stock air cleaner of any style, but I assumed a breather tube ran from the valve cover to the air cleaner housing. Where does the breather connect to a dual-snorkel air cleaner?

OP's photo with the hose and 90-degree elbow looks like the bottom side of the air cleaner vs your photos of the top sides (filter side) ????

Those look to be two different air cleaners. The degreee of separation between the snorkels looks different as well as where the vacuum tube from the thermo heater dashpots are. Is one a 69-70 annd the other a 71 on up?

69 is the wide separation and the other is 70-72.

The circled items are temperature controlled vacuum valves. When cold, they allow vacuum to pass through to the servo that allows either cold air to come in through the snorkel or warm air from the flex duct that is attached to the shield over the DS exhaust manifold, and forces the warm air path to be taken. When they get to around 100F they stop passing vacuum to the servo and you switch to the cold air.


The breather tube on the passenger valve cover connects to the foam filter that is on the passenger side of the air cleaner housing. In this picture, the top cleaner still has it in place. If you look closely at the bottom housing, the filter is missing but the opening is in the same spot.

the angle difference is an illusion;
those are two different 1970 model year dual snorkel air cleaners;
the rear one is a 'dropped base' air cleaner for the Firebird, while the front one is a GP/GTO ect air cleaner.

The first picture is borrowed from the web. These are of my own air cleaner. There are too small holes for the vacuum hose connections. There is a 5/8" hole that I wonder about. I'm convinced it is factory because of the stamped area around it.

That would actually be correct for a 1970-Californai car, or a 71/72 car.

The 1971+ Quadrajets all had a front fuel bowl vent;
The vent was first used on 1970-California carbs (third last character in the application number was "5").

The fuel bowl vent cover was removable for 1971-1974, and then for 1975 became incorporated into the airhorn (at which time it's location moved slightly).

Some 1970 non-California cars received the "California" aircleaner, and those applications used a rubber plug that Ames sells .
So if you're going to use that aircleaner, and you decide that covering the hole with electrical tape just won't do, order Ames part number FN230PL

Excellent information. I cut a hole in my '68 RA lower pan to clear the vent on my '74 carb. Good to know there is a remedy available if I ever change to an earlier carb.
