What is the lowest ratio I can swap into my stock 10 bolt housing? It presently has a 3.23 - 1. I'm about to put a fresh 40 over
455 in. The car has a wide ratio muncie. thanks for any advice. |

In '65, the 3.55 rear end was the standard ratio with the wide ratio transmission (3.23 with a/c). I broke my 3.55 in a race and replaced it with 3.90's. With the wide ratio trans, I would not try to go any lower. My gas miles dropped, but my 1/4 mile times improved by about .20 seconds. I think that is lowest ratio that your rear-end will allow.

You cannot go as low as a 3.90 without using a ring gear spacer. Why not stick with your 3.23 and see how you like it? Unless you want to optimize quarter mile performance, the 455 will like a ratio between 3.23 and 3.73.

I agree with the "Old Man". When Pontiac intro'd the 455 in 70' the gears went to 323 for a 4sp. and 308 w/ac because of all the torque. You might already have the perfect setup.
