Default External regulator and alt getting hot with batter Pwk applied.

Hello , changed my generator to an alt with external regulator. I had the parts for some time never been used. Installed new wiring from info that I found on this web site. Batt Power to alt from amp meter other side off horn relay. Regulator number 1 wire to f on alt 2 wire to r on alt 3 wire jumped into hot wire to alt. 4 not used. Started and charged at idle 13.5 volts . Amp meter indicating a charge. Everything seemed fine except the alt felt hot.
I noticed that the alt and voltage regulator was getting hot with battery power. When I disconnected the negative cable I got a little spark like something was on.
Just doesn’t seem right. Any ideas thanks for any thoughts.
Steve

Steve put this in the "street" section and you'll get a quicker response. Of course the moderators may just move it right back. John

AC Delco regulator D631A, 3 wire regulator. Only one contact coil. no number 2 terminal alt return wire I believe. With out this wire what controls the regulator.
Thanks
