Default Push rod length

So just bared over my 400 and with an original 9.136 and lifter collapsed it’s dead center of my valve stem if I’m right I need to -050 and order shorter push rods is that correct, I had .025 decking for zero height and running comp roller tip 1.5 rockers

Can I assume this is with a crushed head gasket in place?

Also if a valve job was done to the heads that can sink the valves up to .020” or so if the tops of the stems where not also dressed by the machine shop to make up for the valve job.

Do you have 7/16"-20tpi rocker studs? If so, then each full turn of the nut is 0.050". How many turns from "zero lash" to "fully collapsed" to you have, and how much preload do you want.

For instance, if you want 1/2-turn of preload, and it takes 2.5 turns from zero to collapsed, then you need the nut backed off 2-turns.

0.050" per turn, so 2 turns would be 0.100".

Usually I run 1/2 turn , I did put my checker at 9.180 and my pattern wasn’t perfectly centered for trials. Wasn’t too bad just not sure how critical it has to be centered

This is how I was taught, to check for push rod length with hyd lifters. Take one of the hyd lifter and take the clip out and shim it, put clip back in. you’re essentially making a solid lifter out of it. Then do your push rod check having it hit center of valve. With either push rod you have or and adjustable one. Its always worked 100% I prefer to use an adjustable push rod.

You want to see the roller or the nose of the rocker centered on the valve stem when the cam lobe has the valve open to 50% of its lift.
This lift point on any cam is where the valve spends the most of its open time and thus where you want the geometry to be the best.

At times I have found I get .025” more lift after checking by this method.

This means if you change rocker ratios down the road after you have things set dead on you will in the least need to recheck things.

I too also use the Method Gash has posted about.

ok honest opinion factory or spend a duce on a shorter set? I think if i go any shorter that the 9.050 my geometry is going in the wrong direction with being wider ,, 068 cam not much lift and 110 springs
