Default Engine Shops in the US ?

I have seen where Primatech has come and gone .

Where would one locate a good OHC rebuilder? I'll guess that the head will be much more important so are there any leads for shops with experience and good reps?

Theres a shop on west coast of Fla thats done a few successfully.
My neighbor had a full service shop that I had do all my work but hes out of biz now.

I do have a line on a guy close to me that does excellent work, has done some OHC-6 stuff for me but hes not cheap. What do you want done?

Thanks Sprintbird! Being in Texas I know that I will have to ship so I have been putting that into the price.

I have a matching ZH original motor that I would like to bring back to stock. Not going to race it so I would prefer a reliable stock motor. If there are parts out there that improve the performance (ie better pistons, seated valve guides, etc) then I would like to add them to the rebuild.

I have been exploring the use of hypereutectic pistons on stock rebuilds.
The 40+year old cast pistons just dont cut it by todays standards.

For better ring seal use a torque plate when honing.
Not too many shops will have one tho.

your choice on if to sleeve the guides or bore and press new cast ones.
But dont use a shop that wants to ream, its a bandaid approach.

If youre going to drive it,consider using a 1 bbl head set up to 4bbl specs
10.5 on todays gas is just asking for trouble.
You can gain the HP back in other ways.

whats the date code on your block and head?

Paul Spotts is a Pontiac engine builder stock to full race. Do some searching and you'll find he has a very good reputation and reasonable pricing. He wont try to sell you on things you dont need or cut corners. I havent had opportunity to utilize his building service but have bought parts from him on occasion. When I lived much closer he was on top of my builders list. He's still in top 3 I'd consider regardless just less likely due to distance vs 2 others I'm equally distant to. Butler and Mondello's(Calvin Hill a long time Pontiac guy has become the general manager there after Joe passed on and still runs his "Pontiac" shop in Illinois) 1.5 hr drive to either for me. Lots of other good Pontiac shops out there with good reputations so shop around. There may be someone very close to you that prefers Pontiacs and can build you a good OHC.

keep in mind that the OHC-6 shares nothing with any of the Pontiac V-8s
so unless they have a track record of successfully building an OHC-6,I would tread lightly.
This is not to say that ANY good shop could do a good job given the right info,
but so many have the mentality of building SBC and anything outside that box is hosed.

Get a good machinist and put that thing together yourself.

I let the machinist do his thing, and I put it together. My only concern is the head work and making the valve stem heights right. I prefer a machinist that knows what to do with these OHC's. Bottom end stuff is cake that any quality machinist can do.

key is not to cut any off the tips of valves and also make sure the valves are set to same height as stock unmachined seats would allow.
also keep in mind that of the 4 different combustion chamber sizes they used 3 different length valves.Dont mix them up.
a ZH will have 45* seats, which is minor if doing a multi angle valve job.
I would suggest doing a balance job too.
