Default 68 manual gear box and steering shaft not lining up.

Having a problem lining up the manual gear box shaft and steering column shaft on my 68 firebird. I am converting from PS to MS. The gap where the rag joint will go is about a 1/2" to 3/4" off alignment, left to right. Has anyone run across this problem before? Spacers between the steering box and frame would possibly solve the problem, or am I missing something altogether?

loosen the steering column bracket to dashpad (3 nuts) and steering column to lower bracket (1 bolt) and lower bracket to firewall (3 screws). If it is still off, check subframe alignment

I'll try that and see what happens. The subframe should be good as all the gaps lined up excellent before painting. Thanks!
