Default Cam condition?

I have a couple of old cams....a CC 290-b6 SFT, and an Isky 280 Mega HFT.

In the attached photo the CC 290-B6 SFT is in front.

On the CC 290-B6 SFT I notice it only shows polished wear on the top of the lobe and none on the base. Is this cam still good? I would have expected the lobes to be polished all around. Perhaps more so on the peak, but at least some "shine" on the base.

The Isky HFT does have a more "polished" surface all the way around, but still more so on the lobe peak.

What CID motor are you looking to use either of these Cams in?

The SFT was used in a 455 for 30+ years...but mainly as a trailered show car very few miles.
The HFT I used in a 400 for several years. It previously had been used as a weekend track car.
I currently use a 60919 in the 455, but am awaiting a HR cam from Butler.
I am more concerned if these cams are still good.

Measuring the lobe lift of each one will give you a good idea of wear.

My thoughts are that it would be great if you had the lifters that these cams were originally run with, particularly in the correct “lifter to lobe” order. This is critical for the mating surface and proper spin on each lifter.

Besides that, if they show extremely minimal wear you might get away with running them with a new set of lifters. However with all the attention flat tappet cams are experiencing for lobe flattening failure, you might just be better to start with a new cam and lifters.

CC 290-B6 SFT looks good to me to try. I would run new lifters and perform breakin again. i'd only use the originals if they went in the same locations and used the same block.

I did not save the SFT lifters, as I messed up the order when removing, but I do have the springs. It has a 106 LSA which does not play well with power brakes and EFI.

My concern was the lack of a polished surface on the base of the lobes and if it would cause excessive wear on the lifters.

I did a rough measurement of the lobes with calipers and they were all similar.
For now both cams and matching springs are going back on the shelf.

The 60919 cam worked well but left a lot on the table, so I am waiting on a custom Butler HR. LSA = 113, ADV DUR INTake @.050/LOBE LIFT = 238, ADV DUR EXHaust @.050/LOBE LIFT = 248, Intake Lift w/ 1.5 Rockers = .594", Exhaust Lift w/1.5 Rockers = .597"

Cam cores are hard to come by these days so if nothing else you have two good cores to have reground into something a tad smaller.
