Fan vs Shroud
Hi all,
I have a 1969 GTO Recently, (never made noise before) my fan is hitting the bottom of the fan shroud. When I bought the car I didn't notice what it looked like, never needed to. The car runs great! Weird thing is, recently I would hear the noise at startup then it goes away after a few miles and doesn't happen again till the next day start up. I have included a sketch of the problem. not sure how the fan could be so off center from the shroud? Shroud fit looks good. Luckily during the noise investigation, I found I need a new water pump (fan moves a little) so I will be working on that first. It looks like a 69 shroud is different from a 68, might there be another version for a 69? All in all, with the fan/shroud as is, I have never had heating problems, even while driving in 106 degree weather this past summer. Thank you, Jim |

I think I'd be checking motor mounts.

Yep, motor mounts .... and if you get new ones ... get the nice ones that Ames sells, WAY better than the cheapo mounts and will bring the engine up to the proper original height.

Jim,pay close attention to the trans mount.That make a lot of dif on the front of the engine.Tom

Have you done anything with tranny/crossmember?

This is a common problem with Pontiac A bodies, good points so far; too low (worn or incorrect) engine mounts and/or too high trans mount. Other possibilities include trans cross member having rusted out ends replaced incorrectly, lower frame rail(s) at trans crossmember being pushed upwards by improper jacking. Als, past front collision damage resulting in a front frame rail or both being bent upward or if rad support lower rust was corrected in a way that resulted in rad support sitting too high relative to frame rails.
