Default Convertible top frame trim stick

The "trim stick" is the hinged bow with heavy rubber insert that the convertible top is stapled to. On my car the rubber stuff is disintegrating in spots. I bought some replacement rubber strips but taking out the old material is a BEAR! I've had to chisel it out piece by piece. It does not seem to be glued in - is it just stuck from being over 50 years old and probably baked by the sun?
Anyone got any ideas how to remove the old strip easier?
Should I just jam the new strip in (the fit is very tight) or is it glued in somehow?
What about using a material like the windshield sealer that comes out of a tube?
Any advice would be appreciated.

I would scuff the bottom side and use some adhesive. Even the black trim adhesive is ok. I did entire sections of mine that way. Just a little insurance against it getting loose.

FWIW; Below is a link to an older very detailed power-top rebuild write-up.
It has lots of good info that should be of help.
