Your 1972 Firebird.

This switch is on the steering column, near the base. I'm pretty sure Ames has them. This switch is actuated by the back drive linkage.

Lots of pictures in this thread;

Often missing due to header fitment problems or not included during an auto to manual swap. It is a series of rods that operate when the shift lever is moved into reverse. Engages the reverse lights via a switch in the base of the steering column. Also works with the reverse lock out function to lock the car in reverse when the ignition is turned to the lock position.

Here is a pic of a Factory 1970 4 speed column. Switch is what you see on it . This comes on when car is in reverse AND Key is able to come out once engine is off. Its only a 2 pin connector. To do a conversion correctly you need a bunch of backdrive linkage And this switch and connectors for it. You can use an auto harness by just using the 2 wires for reverse that are on the combo neutral safety switch, and replace switch with smaller std switch with reverse only.
Neutral safety is accomplished by the clutch switch.
This column is Hanging upside down by the lever that moves this switch and hooks to the backdrive.
