Broken Harmonic Damper on Firebird 400
Well, after 50 years the stock harmonic damper decided to fracture by the key way. Any advice on a proper repair procedure?
We think pieces of the mounting hub are still in the oil pan.... I would like to avoid lifting the engine out to drop the oil pan , but any advice would be appreciated; we have a replacement damper & seal. THX

You can undo the engine mounts (possibly even loosen one side and lift the other, drop the steering and drop the oil pan I’ve done it at a race once when my oil pump spring came out during a race. That’s gonna be your best bet other than pulling the engine
This was in a 69 bird also so should work out fine.

You might want to also try Damper Dudes, ironically in the same area as Damper Doctor. The price was cheaper and it came out nice on my GTO.

You might be able to fish out the broken pieces using a magnet after removing the front cover. It will be easy to know if you found everything by putting the pieces back together.
This is a good opportunity to replace the timing chain set while you’re in there. Pieces of the broken hub may have damaged the timing set so you definitely need to check it and probably replace it. Buy a new damper, obviously yours is junk and paying someone to restore what’s left would be cost prohibitive.

Thanks for all the advice.
Removed the front cover, used magnet to remove the broken chunk out of the oil pan, drained oil pan & flushed with gas. Let dry overnight. New oil , filter , damper, seal , gasket. Engine sounds great , no squeaks or leaks! Fingers crossed we're done!

Make sure you get the crank bolt tightened to the spec. (160 ft. lbs.) When they're not tightened to spec is when they split at the keyway, as you've already found out.

Good to know & will re-torque this weekend to be sure.
I don't want to repeat this repair again!
