If I can buy the correct vinyl by the yard the front seats are still doable. I’m starting the seat project while the car is still in the bodyshop. Just got first application of high build primer.

Big fan of the Recaro"s also. I've had them in my 74 since 1983. My brother had a set recovered for his 70.

Those look good! I had '84 Fiero seats in my '77. Loved those deep bolsters, and the full recline.

My seat backs had a bad case of the Recaro twist. After straightening them I used some 22 gauge and made reinforcement panels. All broken spot welds were repaired. Also replaced a frayed seat back release cable. These seats had over 100K miles of use and abuse. Legendary has supplied the vinyl by the yard and shipped quickly. I have the TMI Mustang GT Recaro seat foam. Should be ready to take to the upholstery shop soon.

How on earth did you get Legendary to sell you material by the yard? I inquired about getting some Hobnail cloth from them for a similar idea and I got a hard no. And I already own a set of their complete covers.

They had no problem selling the vinyl. I had recently ordered the rear seat cover and door panels from them. The sales person added the vinyl yardage to the same order. 10 month wait on the manufactured items.

I bought a couple pair of 81 NASCAR T/A recaro’s (thanks LadyTaTa) a few years back. Seeing the enthusiasm in this post has me thinking I need to get on the ball putting them in my 71.

Plan was to replace the foam with the TMI foam, and attempt to recover in a pattern that matches the Deluxe black upholstery. I recovered the stock seats in black Ultraleather and NOS black Comforweave. I purchased enough material to play with these.

The one pair of buckets is in pretty bad shape. I may try to save them before I “ruin” a nice pair.

Thanks,
Stan

If you’re going to strip them down to the frames even the pair in bad shape can be used. New webbing is available for the lower seat. Seat back release knobs can be replaced. I modified a BMW seat back release cable to replace one that was frayed. The metal parts can be straightened and repaired with MIG or TIG. When you get them apart you will appreciate the engineering!

I just picked up a set of '81 Pace Car Recaros to use in my Fire Am project as an alternative to the Corbeau GT-8s. Since I've picked them up, I've learned two things that you may find interesting:

1. Lseat.com makes leather seat covers for them, in the original red and black colours, as well as all black, and about a dozen other colours. Front and back seat sets are $350 each;

https://www.lseat.com/products/1981-...ers-front.html

2. The Recaros that are in the 1981 Pace Car are the same LX seats that are in the 79-82 Mustangs, and TMI makes replacement foam for them. AS you probably know, the Recaro seat foam is a lot more firm than standard foam, almost hard. They are available for about $250 per side from CJPonyParts:

those covers look nice, are they just a slip on cover or are they actually replacements that require disassembly of the seats to install?

They're replacements that require installation with hog rings.

I'm confused about the foam, I don't see the grooves in the backrest that the cover fits into.

I wonder if those covers fit Recaro LS seats? Not sure if the LS bolsters are taller.

King seats for any Firebird, I am putting a set of VSE spec Recaro 1981 IdealSitzN's back into my Fire Am and having them trimmed in the factory Carmine Red Hobnail material, just like how GM did with the K-Types.
