My friend bought a a loaded 68 400 Firebird and it has this sunroof.
Has anyone seen them before?

Could be an aftermarket Webasto sunroof. They're a UK company and that style was more commonly seen on European cars but I suppose they could have been installed on US cars back in the day as well. They're still available today: http://www.tudorwebastosunroofs.com

I remember seeing a factory ad with a 1972 Buick GS having that same sun roof.

That sure looks like the same roof.
Were some Firebirds sold in Europe?

The "Sun Coupe's" were sold in the U.S. I used to work on one back in the day, a 72 350 4BBL Red body , white top and interior. Beautiful car, remember it well.

I would think that the tops were installed outside of the factory like an SSJ moonroof, but not positive about that.

I know someone who has one that looks just like that on 70's Nova. It is listed on the build sheet.
