1964 389 into 1962 Bonneville.
I have been having trouble understanding what I need and finding parts to put a 1964 389 into a 1962 Bonneville with 315 Hydro trans. I was told I needed to change the flex plate and the starter ring gear from the 1962 to the 1964 ones. I understand that the crankshaft flange is different between the 2 that's why I need the 1964 flex plate. I think I now have the correct one. Looking up the ring gear is where the confusion begins. If I under stand correctly the ring gear is part of the fluid coupling/converter. I have the parts number book but not the illustration book. I'm not sure what I'm looking up. Now according to Hollander Interchange book all 1961-1964 type 315 w/o converter interchange. Also 1958-1960 front unit couplings, cover assemblies and 1961-1964 type 315 interchange. I don't know if I need some part of trans and if so what it is called. Can someone please clarify?

The pilot on the flywheel is different. It has nothing to do with ring gear teeth.
You do have my phone number!

I believe it will work with the 62 flywheel on the 64 crank as 64 big cars still used the bellhousing starter, although being able to use a block mounted starter. The proper flywheel and starter has to be used with the trans used.Tom

Maybe I'm getting the terminology mixed up. As I understand it the flywheel is the piece that looks like a turbo 400/350 flex plate but with no starter teeth on it. It is flared where it is bolted to the CRANKSHAFT with the 6 bolts. Attaches to the Fluid Coupling/converter with 6 smaller bolts at it's very outer edge. That I have. Hopefully it is the correct one. What I don't have is the piece with the starter teeth that attaches to that. I don't have a clear picture of what it is that I need. Hollander's manual seems to call it Converter, ft unit coupling, cover assembly and says ALL 1958-1960 and ALL 1961-1964 type 315 are INTERCHANGEABLE. Am I looking up the WRONG thing?

Thanks but I believe that those numbers are just the ring with the teeth that has to be pressed onto the flywheel.

Bob, you need a 64 Flex plate and a 1964 Torus cover

I have the flex plate. Will anyone sell a torus cover or do I have to buy a whole transmission?

Also does it use a gasket or an o-ring? Where would I get one of those?
