Hi Tom, Do you know anything about this 62 Lemans that came with Mickey Thompson's cars and crew to the 62 NHRA U.S nationals? the blue one is well documented, but this one isn't?

Looked back at a conversation from
Long ago thanks to old skool (you guys know him as ponyakr) RIP a great guy !
He said :
Hayden Profit was driving M/T's Tempest at the '62 Winter Nats. They actually had the car marked FX/A. Lloyd
Cox drove it at the US Nats. The car won the class at both races

What’s funny is that picture has been standing out in my camera role to me all week long. Is that the car ?

Although I was at the '62 Nationals, I can't remember the details (I paid more attention to Mickey's three dragsters). My only vivid memory of those Tempests is that Proffitt was fantastic at banging shifts of the HD 3-speeds!

I have the old Hot Rod mag showing the blue car being built. Nothing on the white top car. Would Pete McCarthy be a resource?

That's what I figured might be the only clue, short of someone remembering, I asked George K, he doesn't recall it either. I've been looking for a 62 U.S Nats program book that's supposed to have the car number listing info, Steve Cox thought it may have been built for someone and delivered to Nats, thats why not much info on it? if that's the case, where did it end up? supposedly M/T's shop helped Royal out with parts/ advice on there 62 AFX Tempest build for the Nats?

At the U.S Nats believe blue car was 972 A/FX, so 3 numbers off this one.

The Royal AFX Tempest was #989 and does have M/T's name on the fender, but not the car we are discussing.

Look at those packed and stacked grandstands. You can't get a feeler gauge between the fans!! Thanks for the great pics.

You'd have loved it Mike. Even with no nitro-burners, '61, '62, & '63 Nats were fantastic. They capped the entry list at a thousand each year. My favorites were the blown gassers- west- vs east-coast! (Or should I say west-coast vs Ohio George?)

Bummer, that's going to make it harder to figure it out.
