I have a stock '66 Goat daily driver, 389 with 2-speed auto. I want to open up the exhaust but have heard that heat build-up from headers can be a problem as well as ground clearance. I don't need more heat problems, so any suggestions? Do I keep the stock exhaust and just open up the rest? Any thoughts on Walker mufflers and x-pipes for this car?

I would suggest the 67 GTO Ram Air/HO exhaust manifolds. Performance Years carries them. They are 80% as good as headers from reports I've seen.
PY is also now carrying mandrel bent exhaust systems. Contact PY, they'll set you up. - Jim Doran - Some Pics of my 65

What jrdoran said. With your small cam I doubt that you would see any performance difference between the HO manifolds and headers. I think the Walker mufflers are great, but they will be very quiet on your car. I am referring to the Super Turbo's.

Absolutely it makes a difference. The Walkers have a nice performance sound with the factory 744 ("H") cam. That is also about the limit of good performance with the HO manifolds. Larger cams start getting strangled on the exhaust. The 744 was about 224/236 at 0.050" lobe lift. I ran in the 12.80's with that combination with a tri-power 400, a 4 speed and 3.90 gears. That was about 1974-5.

If not the HO exhaust manifold, what would you recommend that won't create a heat problem and clearance problem underneath? If I use an X-pipe, which Walker muffler do you like with it?

I think the combo of the RA/HO manifolds with 2.5 mandrel exhaust and an 'X' pipe is a perfect combo for all but the most extreme street cars. Extreme equals huge cam, huge tires, roll bar, huge carb, ported heads.
