Default 1970 key buzzer questioms....

I have a 1970 Esprit and the key buzzer buzzes when the key is in the ignition and you open the door. That's what its suppose to do just like on my 69. So today I was putting LED cluster bulbs, so I dropped the column slightly to get the cluster out and had to kneel next to the car with the door open. I reached up and pulled the key out the buzzer was still on. I got done doing what I was doing so I checked it and stays on with the door open whether the key is in or not. Is this the way it was for the 70 model? Anybody run into this? Any tips to fix? Is something wrong?

Wiggle the key and lock cylinder, could be worn. Or just found a new grounding due to move components. Lift column up and down and see if it stops as well.

The key minder switch is fragile. It is just two little metal strips that are springy. When the key is inserted, it presses those two strips together. When the key is removed, it relies on the springy nature of the metal to break the contact. My guess is the either the metal strips got deformed or some debris in the column shifted to the minder switch when the column was moved, and now made its way to the switch. I'd try some compressed air to see if it gets the switch to return to open. Is this a tilt or normal column?

Most of these switches got destroyed early, if you removed the lock cylinder before pulling this tiny switch out, it will be damaged

The " switch" is different for tilt than std. Easy to change with a couple special tools. Cheap too

Just to be clear its done this since I got the car. It didnt just happen when I dropped the column. The key is so worn that you can start the car without it. Even if you turn the to the crank position, pull out the key it still does it. Even does it running with the door open. I am going to get another lock cylinder.

Thanks for steering time in the right direction. Took the column apart and the switch was broke. It came out in pieces. I remember taking that out when I tightened up the tilt bolts in my 81 column and just put it back. Can that little switch thing be sourced locally? Here’s what was left of the switch. Very old brittle plastic.

It looks like oer is going to reproduce it soon as CI says it is arriving soon. For some reason the tilt column version is readily avaliable but the regular column. The last time I replaced one I searched the wrecking yards for gm cars without tilt and pulled the columns apart until I found a good one.
If someone knows a supplier that's got them in stock I'd buy another just to have it in stock for whenever I got get at the turn signal switch and find out I need to replace it.

Google GM 7804414. Many vendors do have them. Probably not something on the shelf at a local parts house.
