Default Tips needed: Standard manifold removal on driver's side, '67 A body

Poking around under the hood of the survivor-ish 67, I found multiple smears of hi temp silicone at the corners of the stock, untouched mannys.

That explains the rattling exhaust leaks that make it sound like a scrapper's pickup on trash night.

Rusty old poppers need to come off, and at the minimum, get surfaced. (To gasket or not, that will come later.)

Passenger side looks pretty straightforward with a torch and barrell of kroil; driver's side looks buried behind the steering shaft.

Does the engine need the mounts unbolted and a jack under the pan to get a better angle?

Thanks for any tips or tricks. If it is too painful, it can wait until the re-seal, but the noise is anything but the sound I'd expect from a GTO.

I had a ‘67 GTO that I installed exhaust manifolds on to replace an old set of rusty dented headers.

The trick to getting them in was to have all the bolts already in the manifolds at least on the driver’s side before you slipped them into place. There was absolutely no way to get the bolts in any other way.

So yes you can remove the manifolds without jacking up the engine after loosening the mounts.

Like bman said put the bolts in the manifold before trying to install it. I held them in place in the manifold holes by connecting every 2 together with elastic bands

Sorry for being unclear -

What I'm pondering is how to UNDO the driver's side; looking at the challenge with the steering shaft and engine mounts tells me the engine really needs to go up a few inches to get some real purchase on the bolts.

Pull motor mount bolt and jack up drivers side. Hopefully you don’t round off rusty bolts because it gets more difficult then

I had to have bolts in the RA manifolds i used on my 81 TA .

It will be easier to jack up that side, remove starter, and countershaft if applicable, to remove the manifolds from the bottom. Also for the end holes that are easy to get to I like to use a short stud and nut to hold the manifold in place while starting all the other bolts by hand.
