I worked at KMart in high school. I was in the automotive dept. I cut keys, stocked shelves and sold car parts and car stereos. I also worked in sporting goods sometimes. I assembled bikes, sold guns, ammo, and hunting/fishing licenses. It was a busy store with an auto service dept, a cafeteria and a lawn and garden dept. KMart never changed with the times and modernized. Wal Mart became the better option and has finally won the war of the giant retailers.
RIP Kresge Mart

I haven't been in a KMart for a very long time... And that time it wasn't even for me, but a coworker who split his pants at work and needed a replacement pair ASAP and KMart was the closest place.

Haven't missed our local KMart at all. It's a parking lot now.

Interesting. We still have Kmart here in Australia, its owned and is part of the huge Wesfarmers Group.

When Kmart first opened here it had all sorts of spare parts for your car plus the sporting section sold guns and ammo across the counter to amost anyone. That's ALL gone now and today Kmart is all about cheap clothing and kids stuff.

Must confess that I hadn't been in any Kmart store for maybe 30 years but recently started going with my wife just to buy clothes for my 97 y/o mother who is in a nursing home. The clothes look great and are so cheap that you can afford to toss them out when they start looking ragged. The nursing homes just toss the clothes in an industrial washing/drying machine so its pretty hard on them. Kmart has solved the problem of keeping my mother looking good in her clothes.

Kmart also was a franchised tyre and auto service centre up until a few years ago but they changed the name to MyCar. I read that some people perceived that the Kmart name might have meant cheap service. The MyCar name is just a better look I guess

Before K Mart, there was just the S.S. Kresge department stores. We had one in Woodbury NJ. Across Broad St from the FW Woolworth store, both down the street from WT Grant's. Kinda miss shopping those in-town stores...

There is a Kmart in St Thomas, or at least I thought I saw one there when we were on vacation couple of weeks ago. Difficult to say for sure due to the amount of Hurricane Proof Rum I consumed that particular day!.....LOL.....
