Default Introducing Myself

I just registered for the site, but not new to Pontiacs. A week and a half ago I picked up a 1974 Grand Prix - basically a survivor/cruiser as it is a long way from a show car. On the Hagerty scale my son (he produces their Price Guide) rates it as a 3.5 which is better than Fair condition. It needs a carb rebuild, tune-up and exhaust work which I hope to get done over the winter. For now I is in the back of my heated shop so it is out of the winter weather.

Previous Pontiacs are the 1972 Trans Am 4-speed I purchased in 1984 while stationed in California - sold that in 1988 to purchase a Suburban for my growing family. 1986 Grand Prix I purchased used with 3000 miles when the original owner traded it back in for the just released 2+2. That was a daily driver for many years. 10 years ago I found a very solid 1969 Grand Prix Model J that came from northern Alabama, ended up selling that to my son after he used it in his wedding (for sentimental reasons). He ended up selling before his divorce and I did not want to buy it back because it would remind him of what happened.

After I sold my son the GP I bought a 1975 Laguna Type-S3 and drove for a couple of years, but it needed some attention due to the previous owner parking it under a pine tree for 10 years. Although the body is solid, needles and leaves left on the car cause it to rust in the cowl area (beyond my capability to fix) and the brakes went spongy, so I parked on my 4-post lift right before COVID. Then things started happening to me health wise and I had to make a decision of two. I decided to look for a "driver" 73-77 Monte Carlo or hopefully Grand Prix. I saw the 74 on Facebook Market Place and the add disappeared before I could respond.

In the meantime, my son found me a fairly clean 1988 K5 Blazer in Kansas City that was from Washing State. I am a sucker for Square Bodies so I bought it! A week later the 1974 Grand Prix was advertised again - I was like that hurts! I just watched it for a couple of months and made the decision if I was going to get it, I should make a move so I could store it before the snow flies (and the salt trucks come out)! It was still available so I sent a message, looked at the car, made a deal and brought it home where I got it into my shop 16 hours before the snow hit!

I am keeping the K5 Blazer and the 1978 C20 Camper Special Silverado Trim truck I bought because my wife told me to get it for her. The Blazer will go up to my farm in the Upper Peninsula for local events there, The C20 is my wife's Pride and Joy for local events in Lower Michigan and the GP will be for cruising in style!

My name is Tom Ingold and I got the nickname "Iggy" flying KC-135 Tankers in the Air Force back in the 1980's.

Welcome to the site Iggy, and what a nice looking ride you landed there! My In-laws drove a 72 GP when I first met my wife, loved that car!

My brother is retired AF also, flew KC-135s through the 80s and moved on up to AF2 and retired from AF1 in 2006 as a Lt Col. Thank you for your service also sir!

Welcome aboard -

I started at Chevrolet Flint Assembly, the plant where all the squarebody Blazers and Suburbans were built, in June of 1979. Squares are near and dear to my heart, too.

I might have seen yours go by -

Welcome to the site Tom and nice ride!

You said you flew KC-135 in the 80's. I was stationed at Castle AFB in 1987 - 1990.

First I would like to thank all of you for the warm welcome! I believe the knowledge pool will go both ways.

Mike - I had been through Castle twice by mid 1986 - Upgraded to Instructor then. Spent my time at K I Siberia and of course several trips around the world to different Tanker Task Force bases. I got out at the end of the 1980's due to family reasons but wish I had stayed in. You may remember our old Motto - Real Men Fly Water Wagons!

I fixed the Air Traffic Control RADAR, so I've never heard that motto. I too wish I had stayed in.
