Do chevy heads have the accessory mounting holes like Pontiac?
Seemed like they had maybe one hole with the block providing other mounts? (not that I have done much with chevy at least for 20/30 years)

Yes they have accessory holes just like Pontiac, SBC (after 68) etc.... I was able to bolt up the power steering and AC just as it was intended.

I don't mean to come off as a downer, I'm just more or less surprised I haven't seen mention of this before about the high ports having accessory problems.
I figured that by now there would have been more Pontiac guys building killer street engines with these heads and accessory bolt holes would have been brought to light much sooner? I'm kind of glad that dad ended up reusing his Eddy round port heads on his 571 build now. I'd have been just as upset as the OP in this thread if I found I had to modify a bunch of stuff to get his accessories back on. The only reason he used the Eddy's is because he already had them before the decision was made to build a big inch street engine. During that process he was reminded a few times how much power potential that engine had if he were to use a different aftermarket head like a wide port or some Tigers. I might have to ask Frank some questions now next time I see him. |

I wanted more NA power vs a supercharger in the end and the bigger Round Port was the way to go. I didn't see anything negative about the High Port concerning customization and I wanted to support a pure Pontiac shop.
I am NOT trying to create a negative KRE thread, it's just to make sure if you wanna go down the higher HP path with a street NA Pontiac, there's some hoops to jump through. While we're here... I suspect the KRE D Port is a true bolt on head? I could've just ported it to flow like the as cast high port I suspect. What about the Edelbrock Round Port, same bolt on issues? Here's the reality, once it's tuned next week I won't care much about all the BS it took to get here. Cruising in a 600hp Convertible GTO is pretty badd ass so this thread will only be a memory. LOL

Speaking of high ports, do they need anything special for spark plugs?

However if a nice set of high ports worked over were used it would have made more, and Tony told dad a set of Tigers and the right camshaft could push it close to 1000. But the extra $5000-$7000 needed to get there just didn't warrant the effort. |

Even my 409 Chevy heads have accessory bolt holes!
If not using power steering the later '75 and up alternator bracket does not use that hole. It is just used to lock the PS rear bracket down.

(In comparison to the stock heads.) The ports being a lot bigger than stock heads would require a manifold to be worked on to fit the heads. Not much different than trying to mount a pre-72 intake to a 72 up head.will bolt on but won't work without some adjustment/fitting. Or the 68 earlier timing cover/water pump compared to the 69 later setup. The pulleys and other things need worked out. Almost everything needs some work if not the original factory setup.

The high ports are missing a middle hole I believe.

Oh boy, Edelbrock Round Port not needing accessory mods is a real kick in the ass. If this is true, it would be cool for someone to create a thread on that and show some pics. I searched and found little on High Ports and wasn't informed on the mods needed.
Early 1969 down with the 4" water pump is the bracket problem. There's plenty of Ebay options for late 69 and up Pontiacs with the 4.5" pump concerning alternator and power steering brackets. I think it was like $130, a total steal and time saver in comparison. High Port is missing the middle accessory bolt due to a water jacket. I get why you'd design it a certain way, just need a heads up, don't like delays and spending $ on stuff I didn't think I'd need too or was a surprise. All this wouldn't be a as big deal if there were accessory parts to buy along with the head like the water crossover. Not knowing you have to mod is different than knowing you have too and there's these things to buy and still buying. I think in my case, D Ports and big porting would've been the better street solution, I just didn't know. Now its out there, maybe even a future accessory bracket tab like mine. The alternator bracket is different, that might need a complete redo by someone.

wide port e heads go 370 cfm, support 740 hp or so? but you do need offset valvetrain. i think they can go 340 or so without all that. |

Dad's is an early 69 too with the short water pump, the round port E heads work fine. Like I said, they have the factory mounting locations present so it's no big deal to bolt on the accessories.

I'll second round port E heads have all the same holes a 6X head have.
