Default Steering LTL reduced?

'64 GTO upgrade from manual to JGC PS and LEEDS front discs. All is going well and I ckd the steering travel for binding. It is very smooth turning by hand at the rag joint LTL.

Here is my question. The Jeep box LTL, without steering linkage connected, is 3 turns. After all linkage is connected, but not torqued, it drops to 2-1/2 turns LTL as the steering arms contact the lower control arms. Is this by design or will this cause damaging stress?

THANKS

That is by design for A body cars. The factory steering boxes did not have internal stops, they used a stop directly on the steering arm connected to the knuckle.

Yep, as Jason says it is by design. That's specifically why the steering knuckle arms have those little tabs.

I just recently connected the steering wheel to my new JGC box, too. It's going to be a while before I can drive the car, but the change to 2.5'ish turns lock-to-lock is pretty awesome just pushing it around the shop!

Thanks guys, that's what I thought. The manual box didn't loose as much LTL when linkage was connected. Is there a relief in the PS box back to the pump when you hit the limits?
