Default 78 400 d port headers

I need to replace the headers on my 78 Macho. My choices are

Headman 28140
Hooker Comp Headers 4901
Dougs?

Which ones do you guys think I should go with. I think it has headmans on it but are rusted out.

I'm currently using Hooker Competition but I've read that the Hedman have a better fit around the engine (400) and oil filter clearance. How about the Hedman with ceramic coating $$? As is $234 at Summit.

im using the hedman 28150 on my 78 & they are excellent headers with ball & socket style collector flanges. they fit great & allow for use of a 4 speed trans. with the smaller head bolts they have decent wrench clearance. at $280 they are the best value for a quality header IMO. i just wish i would have got the ceramic coated ones or done it locally before installing, i used POR header paint that looked great & lasted for about 5-6 years but has started to flake off.

the 28140 are only 1 5/8" tubes with triangle bolt together flanges, the 28150 are 3/4" tube with the socket flanges... for $50 more the 28150 are the better header.

I saw a set of these on a 74 455 Formula yesterday and they fit really nice and were pretty tight to the floor pans.
Not sure if any one else has used them as I have Hedmann on my other rides.

I have dougs on my 461 and Ram Air Restoration long branch on my 400. Both do the job.

I'm very interested in this thread. I have a '75 Firebird that I'm setting up for road racing and will have low ground clearance. The car currently has an old set of Hookers on it. The left side hangs at about the same height as the engine crossmember (great!) but the passenger side hangs lower and is already beat up. So my need is for new headers that fit tighter to floor on the passenger side. The right side currently sits about 2.5" lower than the side rail of the subframe (see picture). Ground clearance is the big deal. Coatings, etc. are less important to my choice. I'm using a remote oil filter so I don't care about filter clearance.

Can you guys take some measurements on the headers mentioned, or look from the front and let me know if they hang below the crossmember? The D-port headers (1.75" primaries) that have been mentioned:

Hedman 28150
Summit headers in post #4
Doug's # D570

Thanks!
Eric

I would lean towards the Hooker Super Comp. They will fit, they are a good header and would be "period correct". I'd also have them coated flat black. If you don't care about any of the above the Doug's are a better choice.

I went thru this 2 years ago.....for my 78 Macho

Not a big fan of headers on Pontiacs....but Macho's all came with Hookers...and previous owner had tossed them and gone back to stock log style manifolds.

I had a new set of Hookers but could not talk myself into going down that path....I've removed MORE headers from Pontiac V8's with a sawzall than I can remember

Ended up going with a set of Tribal Tri-ys...which are specifically built for proper ground clearance... starter clearance and oil filter clearance.

The seller claims you will smash your oil pan before the collectors.....They actually offer better clearance than Ram Air manifolds on 2nd gens...

Took about 3 months.....but they look great......Plan to install this summer hopefully...

3rd picture is Dougs..... you can see that you will be grinding speed bumps with them...
