When ordering a 400 base engine GTO, what was the standard rear end axle ratio, and was it open or posi?

1969 GTO Rear Axle
Thanks!
Would this be the same for an AC car, or does that drop to a 3.23? |

I believe it dropped to a 3:23 if you had AC. My base 69 auto 350 horse car with AC came with a 3:23.

I think a 4 speed came with 3.55 and an auto came with 3.23, all other gear ratios were optional unless it was a RA car. Posi was optional on all cars except RA cars.

Yeah mine was just a std. 350hp 400 with no air auto 3.23 single track, I still have the original rear end never been apart setting in the garage. same with the motor 197,000 miles on it when I pulled it. I did put 2 timing chains on it.

Factory documentation states the following standard ratios...
1... 400-350 engine, manual trans and no AC: 3.55, with AC 3.23. Auto trans no AC 3.36, with AC 3.23 2...400-366 engine, all trans with no AC: 3.55, with AC 3.23 3... 400-370 engine, all 3.90 (AC not offered) 4... 400-265 engine, 2.93 with no AC, 2.78 with AC (auto trans only, no manual trans offered) However, most but not all base engine 350 horse automatic cars without AC I’ve had or parted over the years had 3..55’s. I’ve seen a few with 3.23’s also. I think there was a change to the 3.55’s but I’ve never seen documentation of it. The occasional 3.23 in this application could be either a factory substitution or error or of course a later change out (the 3.23 axle was never officially offered as an optional ratio on the base engine auto no AC powertrain combo). As an example I recall parting out a rotten but untouched one owner car. It had the buildsheet as well as the original window sticker. It was a 350 horse, auto no AC car but the window sticker showed it was ordered with the optional (standard on an AC car) declutching fan. The car was built with that fan but also the AC sized pulleys and a 3.23 axle (confirmed by the buildsheet), I suspect what happened is during chassis assembly the clutch fan on the engine made the line worker assume it was going on an AC car so he threw in a 3.23 axle.

Nodular or not?
I paid $600 for a '69 3.55 Nodular limited slip in decent condition about 2 years ago.

Hmmm.... I wouldn't think it would be worth more than couple of hundred dollars. Just a guess though. If someone nearby needs it for their resto because it's correct and not having to ship it could be worth something to the person in need.
