Don’t even go there! Does your lumber have gas?

Masking tape. It seems like it went up 50%. Crazy. I consider myself lucky that we always have left over stuff when we demobilize a job, and the company says to ditch it. I can't remember the last time I've had to buy a nice paint brush.

Sounds like a "TREX" deck...a composite material.

Yes I think that’s what it’s called. It has some kind of textured paint on it, it’s a little rough on the bare feet but not painful rough.

Trex is a wood/plastic composite with the color in it. It's not a paint applied and none should be needed. Yeah it's rough but then again you won't slip on it like you will with painted wood.
I have to replace my storage shed and was going to build one. Not now after seeing the prices on wood and siding. The Home Depot near me has larger premade sheds that so far are reasonably priced. I'm looking at a 12x16 2 story with storage above on each end and a barn type roof for a bit over 4700 that sits on a metal frame work. It's delivered in sections and built on site. Another place that sells Amish built sheds had one that was about the same but has a few extras and it sells for over 19,000. It's only 10x16 with the second story for storage with stairs. No way I'll spend that kind of money.... unless I have to live in it.

Just got an estimate for 1800 sq ft, 30 X 60 X 12 pole building, $76,000...........
Includes concrete and wiring, man that seems too high, 42.25 a square foot. That's roughly what I paid to have a home built per square foot in 1992. |

We are building a new detached garage next to my house. It's 30' x28' with a second floor apartment for my stepson. The best price I could get on lumber is 24k. Others were 26k and 27k. That's framing lumber only.

1992 was a long time ago. Careful - you may start sounding like my old man, quoting prices from the '40s.

I went with a 1200 sq. ft. insulated metal building on a 5"-6" reinforced concrete slab with 17' center height. Built a mezzanine for additional storage. Fully wired. Have about 30k in it complete (but I've done some of the work).

Steel bulding prices come in at how much one can do theirselves & wrangle up reasonable price experienced help to erect. Having taken numerous bids 3+ years ago from local contractors utilizing local heavy advertising/TV commercials, as well as driving new 80K $ pickups, one could see where the $$$$ was going. i went to a large metal building mfg/supplier & gave them the plans i drew up. Was able to cut out the blue sky. Also realize one can get real extravagant with electrical fixtures & lights, & that can get expensive, but electrical install costs can also be trimmed.

For reference when I had the house built in 1992 I had a pole barn built in 1993. That building was 1200 sq ft, 30 X 40, it was $7000, I only had $1600 in the concrete, so $8600 total. There is no way to justify adding 600 sq ft to a 1200 sq ft building for $57,400 over 28 years, at least in my opinion.
I was planning for roughly $40,000, $76 000 is TFH, I'll be getting another quote, you can be sure of that. The realtor just gave me another pole barn company to call today. |

There is absolutely NO shortage of lumber in central Missouri, I won't comment about current prices.
However, 53 years ago, when my Dad built (with my help) a new garage, we both decided if either of us was ever to lead a life of crime, there was no reason to rob banks, just lumberyards! Things maybe haven't changed much. Oh, and Dad is gone, but the garage is still standing, and there are still no cracks in the concrete floor we poured ourselves. Jon

Prices, concrete here for 4000psi(typical floor) $135.00 /yard,min.5yds. We have at least 6 quarries locally,40 miles apart. My point is we have river sand, stone -yet high prices. Only 2 of the 6 quarries, locally, is American owned by a guy, local guy who wears jeans to work ,who didnt graduate high school! The other quarries are owned by Hanson-Heidelberg. They will not load pickups. Also they consider themselves the big guy on the block.

Lumber is not the only thing sky rocketing in price. Steel and aluminum prices are also going crazy. The government in their infinite wisdom raised the tariffs on imported metals and as a result prices at the retail level went up 50% or more. The idea was to stimulate domestic manufacturing but steel and aluminum are commodities and retail at about the same level regardless whether they are imported or domestic. When you buy gas for your car, no one tells you whether the gas was refined from domestic or imported oil but the price at the pump is pretty much the same where ever you buy it.

Actually steel prices are indexed by region for domestically produced metal. There is a global average, but prices vary widely for domestically produced metal. North American, Europe, India, Mexico, Asia all have their own pricing structures.
Steel that must be sent here from China or India obviously have higher transportation costs than metal shipped from Canada or produced in the US. Commodity prices do not reflect transportation or distribution costs. Same with most commodities, when you invest in a commodity you will be doing so on a particular exchange located in the region you are investing. But of course global prices do impact domestic prices as does changing production numbers. The dramatic rise in US steel prices has taken place mostly in the last 8 months, the tariffs were put in place in 2018. The current rise in price is attributed to decreased production during Covid shutdowns combined with increased demand due to increased demand for consumer goods during Covid. So far the US steel industry is encouraging Biden to keep the tariffs in place .. not sure if that's a good sign or not. |

Needing to help my kid sheath his pole building that he started last fall. I'd be ecstatic to pay $38 for some 7/16" OSB! In western Montana and eastern Washington, HD has 7/16" for $51 a sheet!!!!! When I did my shop in 18, I paid (and probably overpaid) $15 a sheet. He was told by a contractor that this will continue for probably another year and a half

I used Azek brand decking for our house here. It's solid PVC. Only downside is that it gets pretty warm on the feet if the sun has been on it.
