A bunch of great stories here. I really don't know what y'all are doing wrong, all my friends and family members screw the dealerships over when they buy a new car. They also get top buck for their trade-ins.

Excellent cars. I had a Camry Solara Coupe the first year they came out. It was a great, trouble free car too. I also recall the quality of the leather interior being better than its competitors.

Agree with it makes them feel good, and also the way the dealer writes it up, they really think they beat him.

Nobody "beats" the dealership ... the dealership can say NO just the same as the customer if they think they will lose money. No one is forcing the dealership to sell a car. If a dealership says YES ... it's because they make money when they do.

There are few people worse in this world than car salesmen. One are lawyers, and the other are shady NOS parts retailers.

The reality is yes, the dealership makes money, but they do look for easy marks that know zero about buying, and selling a car. The more information you have on your side, the better the deal you can make.
Low info customers, or people that don't deal well with confrontation are where the dealers can make a higher percentage over investment. These are the people that should buy cars from a "no haggle" establishment. Since almost every time I buy a car it's a used car, and there is usually something mechanically not 100% with it I can buy under their asking price because I'm willing to buy "as is", no warranty, no guarantee. This is where you have to talk to the used car manager. Certain dealers won't sell to the public on an "as is" basis, so I find dealers that will. My idea is that no one hits a home run every time they step up to the plate, I like them to get a base hit off me. The negotiation points are between a double or a triple, that's how I rationalize it. |

It might work a bit differently in the US than here in Oz but my opinion of New and Used car salesmen (and women) is that generally they have a pretty hard job.
The buying public seem to have an automatic perception that anything to do with buying a car is going to be difficult, they are going to be screwed over etc so the public approaches the whole event with a bad attitude. In turn, the sales person has been pummelled so many times by smart arse customers; they are already on guard before words are even spoken. On top of all this, the sales people are working at the lowest level in the hierarchy of the dealership. They have aggressive sales managers above them who are almost certainly demanding a certain number of sales monthly or the salesman's job is on the line. Lot of pressure on them before the deal is started even. Mostly they live on commissions. Don't forget, we all have to eat and provide for our families. Sales people of anything are no different. If you do your research thoroughly BEFORE you even approach a dealership, you are just so much better off. When the sales person starts talking, you should already know the answers. If you don't like the terms, just leave your name, express your interest in THAT car, and walk. If they call you back, you win. If they don't call back, you know there wasn't a deal to be done at that dealership. Its not difficult if you don't want it to be so. JMHO

Not me. I went to Vegas 10 years in a row to work the CES and attend my employer's (Japanese and they love to gamble) annual operations recap meeting also in Vegas. I never won enough money to play more than a couple hands of blackjack on the house's money before they won it back.

I'm not much of a gambler but walked through the Casino in Elgin once. I was amazed at how folks acted walking around the place giving away there money. I didn't see anyone winning. One guy in particular was loosing a $20 chip approximately every five seconds. |

I live in Elgin and have never been to the Casino. I was at the Joliet Casino and won $50 on the first pull on a dollar slot machine. Took the cash, went straight to the bar and waited for my buddy to lose his money. It didn't take long.

People get mad at car dealers because they sell a person a product. When that product fails or the person becomes dissatisfied later down the road.. The car dealer becomes an A-hole. The car business can be stressful.. In all honesty... most customers are A-holes trying to get over.. Who lies more than a car salesman???? A customer... If a customers mouth is moving.. they're lying.. BTW.. I own a small used car lot and an auto repair shop..

Keep in mind....all dealers are also customers. They're getting their cars somewhere!

Here's a tactic some dealers use ... they ask for your keys to appraise your trade and then play "who has the keys?" while they try to work the deal. This happened to me about 10 years back. After my third time telling the sales manager "There's nothing more to discuss, get my keys, I want to leave", I scooped up the keys to the demo car I test drove off the his desk and told him "Fine, I'm taking your car for an extended test drive while you look for my keys" and got up and started walking away. Amazing how quickly they found the keys.

Words I heard from car salesman on my last three buying experiences, "This is our Lowest price", "You won't find a better deal than this one". " We are at the bottom, You can't get a better deal" maybe you have never said these words. But three different salesman said these words and they were not true, walking away dropped the price later the same day or the next day. What have you heard from a customer who was buying and did not have a trade in for you, that was bad and cost you money? |
