Default Looking for suggestions on wheel primer

Im sure this has been discussed but couldn’t find any info.

I just blasted my rally 2 wheels and am waiting on the paint kit from Ames. What is the recommended primer to use on freshly blasted wheels. Epoxy, self etching etc. going to be using rattle cans. And am using the paint from the APE kit.

Thanks,Chris

Epoxy is Best....but doesn’t come in a rattle can ( I don’t think ) .. so ...for rattle cans - Get some SEM self etching primer....put 2 coats on...15 minutes between coats....then let it dry for an hour. Then without doing any sanding, you can then put on 2-3 good coats of SEM high build primer right over the un sanded self etching primer. Let dry over night...then hand sand with 400.... then maroon scuff pad...clean with pre sol...also sold by SEM in a spray bomb. Wipe clean ....and do your paint. DO NOT PAINT DIRECTLY OVAH THE SELF ETCHING PRIMER...IT MUST BE TOP COATED WITH HIGH BUILD PRIMER......or all your paint will fly off.

Excellent reply. Thank you. I wasn’t aware of not being able to paint over self etching primer. I wonder why.

You can buy 2K epoxy primer in a rattle can, but it's usually about $30 a can. For certain jobs (wheels being a good one), I get cans of it from my local auto paint store, made by SprayMax.
Eastwood also sells it. And if you Google it, you'll find multiple sources.

Once you break the internal seal in the can that mixes the two parts, it's only good for about a day.

It’s says it on the can...not to paint over. And a long time ago...I painted over it....and they were right...it flaked off.

This may be too late to be of any help now -
I have been using a self-etching zinc primer by Rust-Oleum (rattleball #249322) for certain things for about 10+ years now. It works nice and you can topcoat it without sanding. Or let it cure , then sand it , and paint it.
Sells at walmart and lowes hardware for about $5 a can.

If the wheels were sand blasted with coarse grade sand, they might need an additional primer on top of the self-etch.
Rust-O has primers too

You can top coat it with primer without sanding....but top coating a Zinc self etching primer with color is not good. Both DuPont and SEM self etching primers cannot be painted over....just read the directions to make sure.

Says right on the can - able to topcoat after 30 minutes. (Rust-Oleum rattleball #249322)
That is why i recommended it for Cas , and why i use it.
Very convenient

Dupont 615s Vari-Prime was a self-etching zinc primer/sealer.
Could topcoat right on top of it too - Lucite, Dulux, Centari, Imron -by the book

Some can, some cannot.
Rust-Oleum self-etching primer is one that can.
Nice product for a rattleball job

Don’t know what tech sheets you are reading...but DuPont 615 CANNOT BE TOP COATED WITHOUT BEING PRIMED Or Sealed.. it’s false info like this, that gets the hobby enthusiasts in trouble. But anyone using any products should read the tech sheets for themselves .

They have reformulated it from the original version then.
Didn't even know it was still on the market to be honest.
That is why i used the word "was" instead of "is"
In the 80's and 90's you could use it wet-on-wet as a primer-sealer for all 4 DuPont Topcoats.
It was true
I was an Imron guy back then.

PPG DP-40 was another self-etch that could be topcoated wet-on-wet back when.
Not sure if it is still that way or not.

Main focus was telling Cas about the Rust-Oleum Self-Etch
He wants rattleball
Topcoat after 30 minutes - its on the label
Works Great
You might like it too

DP 40 was an epoxy....used that in 1981.... before that in the 70’s I used 80S lacquer primer...with poor adhesion...lol.

Smelled that Imron once...and said no thanks to spraying that iso laden cancer causing product. Didn’t have a fresh air system for spraying that crap.
