This may be too logical but someone went through a lot of trouble to grind the casting numbers off ... presumably because the heads aren't correct to the car or the motor. Date codes might be close but wrong type of heads and maybe even a mismatched casting numbered pair.

I thought the same thing as Greg. Where I drew the red circle is what I thought was the faint outline of a '1' but maybe it's the remnants of the casting pad (circled in blue on other head)

Took a wire brush to them, date code is definitely E069.
May 1969.

But it looks like there are a 1 and 1 on the casting pads, WTH?

Those impression are not the number 1, they are the impression remains of the flat head screws used to hold the number plates in the casting mold as in my far clearer picture here shows.

The only way for you to better nail down what it is you have for Heads there at this point is to CC a few chambers.

Also those heads may have started life as 2bbl heads with pressed in studs, so if you yank out some of those studs and guide plates it may be possible to determine that or not, or post up some pictures of the chamber side of the head so we can see if they indeed started off as small valve heads..
If this is the case then they might have been a number 46 casting .

If there was grinding would that be noticable? The grinder should leave a mark at least 1 over time. Yes cc em easy way to tell. Big thing would be no cracks.

Pontiac heads that where once done by many of the big rebuilders that sold nation wide back in the day would just grind off the casting numbers to cut down on the head inventory needed.

If two different casting number heads heads started life within 5 CCs of chamber size of one another the rebuilder would just mill the bigger chamber head .030” instead of just making a .002” clean up cut.

In terms of a rebuilt head and the crappy paint rebuilders used on them if back in even 75 you slapped on a set of rebuilt heads, then after just 8 to 10 years of every day street running the remains of any grinding work done would have just rusted away aided by the heat of the exh ports!
