OK, more good thoughts guys. Chuck, I appreciate your thoughts and they are PUI covers. I agree they just DID NOT hit the nail on the head with the colors. Suprising that two different vendors got fairly close to one another, but it's just not right.
Oxley at one point sent me this rattle can of DDL paint, which I think was for the metal ashtray front. I just sprayed some of that on some masking paper and I think it looks really close to correct - considering it is still glossy here. Jonny - I agree things were not all one color and I sure don't want to make everything 100% identical. I've just always wanted to get some thoughts on these. The PUI seat covers almost show some of the black through the blue like they didn't give it quite enough coats to fully cover or something like that. Not that the color is correct anyway. Thanks for looking and offering your advice. Does anyone have pictures of the 1971 Legendary 201 or 211 trim code seat covers and/or door panels they could possibly share? Chad

Cool. Thanks Chuck.
I did get new foams (buns) for my car back then, but I was just looking at the buns for my car - 1971 Standard - on the Legendary web site and as I zoomed in on the foams I could see it says American Cushion Industries. Those are good cushions made by a company local to me - just over in Shelton, WA. I just bought the 1966 Mustang standard front buns for my 1966 Ranger - no rear seat in the truck so didn't need those. They obviously use the same boxes for several different makes/models. On the side of the boxes. So it appears Legendary is a reseller of ACI buns. https://www.legendaryautointeriors.c...A%221%22%7D%5D Compare to this http://www.americancushionind.net/pr...bird73-81-std/ Chad

The Legendary covers looks great! assuming those with the new ACI cushions they sell? (just saw Chad's reply after I posted this) I used the ACI in my '72 and you can tell as soon as you pick them up they are extremely high quality. I'll add a pic of a small modification I made to the upper headrest portion on the buckets that made it easier for me to keep the covers smooth in that area in case that helps anyone else.

Chad,
I'm assuming this was directed at me, so here you go. I took these pictures yesterday, with an odometer reading of 17,826. Everything in the interior is original (color-wise), with the exception of the plastic pockets in the door armrests. Mine had discolored (lightened up) over the years, so I had them repainted to match the interior. There is a little discoloration of the filler panel under the steering column and the ashtray cover, but there is very little discoloration of the glove box door. The rest of the interior plastics, (kick panels, seat backs, and the inner quarter trim panels all look good. This is probably due to the many years of indoor storage. |

Chris, this is like the holy grail of 1971 201 interiors. Can you possibly get a shot of the left and right lower front floor vent grilles? I can see the passengers side somewhat in one shot but I can't quite get the details. One of the drivers side, too, would be beauty.
Thanks so much! Chad

The lighting seems to make a huge difference, too. If I take an example rear kick panel outside under natural lighting with the same camera it lightens up a lot. It's raining here today so there is no sunshine but you can see the difference between that.
And inside with all of the same original parts from my car, plus the repainted metal pieces from over the door and the A pillar and a chunk of headliner material that is a potential. You might notice the inner door handle trim pieces in there. I know they are not like yours. I think we had discussed that before. I kick myself over the seats since the covers were in good shape except for one spot on the drivers seat. Everything probably needed to be resewn at the seams, but the material was still fairly good. Here's some I have of the original seats. Not much, but something to compare to. I should have at least saved the original covers, but no going back now. Chad

Do you mean the kick panels? If so, will these pictures do? If not, just let me know, and I will pull the car out and take more pictures (It's too dark in the garage to get good pictures unless I use a flash). Also, those newer pictures you took, the ones taken outside in the natural light, look dead-on to the color of my interior.

If it matters, my cousin Ken is on here and goes by 'HOkenny' iirc;
He has a '71 TA, which has a completely untouched interior; His is a code 211 car. It's not mint, but it too will show colour differences between panels. He's actually my mom's cousin, and as a teenager, I would occasionally hear about him at family gatherings; Imagine just how cool it was to meet him the first time; Me in my '70 Formula; Him in this TA. Maybe a love for Pontiac's is in the genes? lol

Mighty fine looking interior Chris!
Chris & Chad, question.... was the original '71 211 code comfort weave material, real comfort weave, or just embossed? the original black comfortweave seats I've pulled out of several deluxe interior '71's have all been real comfortweave. The original comfortweave covers I've pulled off of three sets of original '70 Bird seats, (black as well as sandalwood), were all embossed not real comfortweave.

I can't say for certain myself. The only deluxe interior car I've owned was the 219 black. I don't recall now if the seats had been redone or not, but the material was amazing. It was a definite weave and felt like if you spilled your Coke it would go right through it. I never tried. It had a certain amount of stretch to it, too. Hard to describe. Maybe Brad can take some close-ups of them? He owns the car now, at least last I had heard he still had it. The best picture I have of the seat material is probably this one. Front and back seats were all the same material. Very comfortable.
Chad

I came back to reply again to this:

I have a set of 1970 213 seats, and I'm pretty certain they are real comforweave too... Is there something to look for to distinguish? My gut say those 'fake' comfortweat covers were repaired/replaced covers.

I've been spending some time working on getting the door gaps set. I'm going for about a 3/16" gap, but when I set that as the lower gap along the rocker then it seems a little wide at the A-pillar. Tell me what you think. I know it's a little hard to tell with the tape in the way. Yes, those are paint sticks that I put thru my planer until they were exactly 3/16". Working alone most of the time so I have to get creative.

I've got the drivers door all snugged down so it won't move. I did put the glass in the door and the inside handle and brackets so it weighs pretty close to final weight. Hopefully the mirror, inner door panel and outer handle don't throw it off. I'm pretty happy with where it is.
The front lower gap looks bigger but it's just that the ceiling lights are shining down on there. Chad

Door gaps are way off. You're going to have problems with the bottom of the doors hitting the sills once the carpet and aluminum trim is installed. You need to get the door up higher. Spec is a lot wider than people think - 1/4". The interior door panels on early cars with the masonite arm rest are heavy so you should install them when setting gaps. At the A-pillar, set the door to be flush or slightly inward of the pillar or it will rub on the fender. For best fender gap results the door lower edge should be slightly behind the rocker panel. Here are the specs.
