I bought the hood that was on EBAY, "The supposed '72", The hood that was on my car had the notches also, and you'd be hard pressed to tell me it wasn't original to the car. There is no sign of this car ever being wrecked.
BVZ, I'm leaning towards doing all at once, maybe some of the suppliers will give me a break if I'm buying 4 of everything. I left my camera out at my shop, but I took some pictures yesterday with 3 bodies in one room, 3 chassis lined up outside, kinda neat. It took me all day yesterday to hang a 1/4 on my Gold '70, got in the sauce at 1:00 and slowed me down(it was Bday). I actually have 5 engines at the machine shop, I think I have them overwelmed with classic Pontiac iron, The shop manager told me Friday that they were going to commit a week here soon to get me finished up. They're going to DYNO everything when they are done. Should be neat to compare HP and torque, and power bands on engines ranging from Basically stock 389 Tripower, to stroked 389 tripower, to RAM III's, up to the 455 HO. If I could find a RAMIV block, I'd put one of those together too to compare, I have basically everything else to build one. Getting a late start today, and it's going to be a hot one.....DW

Were the hood scoups painted black? The hood had the same part number for 71-72 according to the Resto guide part number 481419. Judge grill were blacked out with part no. 484271 rh and 484272 lh. other GTO grills were 483266 rh and 483267 lh. Bezels were the same for both 483942 rh and 483943 lh.
All three of my 71 GTO hoods are without notches. My 72 GTO did have notches, and all had original hoods. I would bet back in the day since parts numbers were the same a replacement hood for a 71 was with notches? Back in 77 I had may first 71 GTO hood + replaced after a few whiskey dents.

You can see some of the remnants of why the hood got so bad hanging out the lock hole....Mouse nests...solid across the front of the hood and in the decklid bad. These cars were prone to it anyway, add mice nests in there to help hold the moisture, and hello, spend another grand on restoration.
Is it hot down in Tulsa, probably a good day for a tube top photo of the wife helping you with the car Steve? Do they still make those? Does the picture look like three judges that need some work?...DW

Some super cool pic/shots Doc.
Silver was the first color to die back in the single stage lacquer days. I have to believe the car was left unprotected for an extended period at some time, judging by the paint degradation. I've seen those hoods that bad or worse around the front - with no signs of varmint infestation. Like you say - they are prone in that area anyhow. 71-72 hoods went to hell so easily it's pitiful. Even around here. In all my years of parting Pontiacs and scouring junk yards only found two nice examples - out of maybe 25-30. Fenders on 71/72 endura cars didn't fare much better either. I think they had corrosion promoting coatings, instead of anti-corrosion coatings. Majority of 71-72 455 HO, and 73-74 SD cars I've seen had wide gaps in cast date/build date. I think the designers/planners knew they had the Big Sh:t engines to offer and anticipated larger demand than the dingbat salesmen and low profile performance ads actually delivered in orders for them. I can't believe anyone who had half a clue opted for a basic 400 or 455 in 71-74. |

The engines at the machine shop being checked out. What would you guys suggest for a rebuild? Externally I want it all to appear stock, however internally what would you do. At this point I'll be running a 7049270 SR carb that could be jetted however necessary. I don't know anything about 455's. The rear is a 3.55 open that I'll be changing the guts to posi. The tranny is being completely gone through, with a few tricks being added to take a beating if necessary.
I'm picking up a hood this weekend, hopefully it's as nice as the pictures. Has anyone seen an interior for a '71 from Legendary? Not much actually progress on this one this week, I've been working on my gold '70, it may make it to the rotisserie this weekend however....DW

I have seen samples of various years from legendary in person, and seen the competitions. Legendary is much nicer and will have them do my 68 interior. BTW, nice pictures and story telling.

Didn't see any 71-2 hoods yet, but there may have been a couple of deck lids at the swap. |

As far as sheetmetal goes, there has been 2 or 3 mfg's that produced the parts and sell them to all the dealers out there including myself. I can tell you this, yesterday I was on the phone placing an order with one of my suppliers who is the bigest MOPAR supplier in the country, he is the supplier for YearOne and Legendary and so on and he said that there is another sheetmetal startup company that has already begun to produce sheetmetall that is far more superior and correct for the muscle car era. They are building their inventory before going to market and they should be ready to go in a few months. Currently I sell sheetmetal from the other suppliers, but as soon as I hear that the new supplier is ready to market I will also carry theirs.

Well thanks for all that, I needed the 101 in interior supply.
Hopefully I'll never wreck my car and need sheetmetal, but it would be nice to get a decent rear qtr interior panel some day. |

I don't know who did this 71 Judge vert int. But door panels look more puffy than originals. The other green 71 Judge int looks a little better. Last one is an original interior for comparison sake.
But, it would be wise to see an actual comparison since I not sure who these repro interiors from. Things to look at is comfort weave and seams, and watch out for puffy door panels.
