Default Pontiac DOHC & HEMI

Was browsing my old magazines.

Anyone here actually see one of these engines?

Have the privilege to see one running?

very very cool these were ever made.

Interesting regarding John DeLorean wanting to get Mark Frank out of the way comment.

I know Mac McKellar was behind the dohc engine. I believe he attended some pontiac GTOAA meets but I never got to see him at one.

My understanding is the one pictured on the cover of Hot Rod never made it past the mockup stage and was never an actual running engine. Mac McKellar owned a 1963 Grand Prix that had the single overhead cam engine. As I recall there's quite a story about what happened to the car and the engine after he died, you can do a search here to find previous discussions about those engines.

I am very glad when I see these kinds of posts (about Mac and his engines).

I was fortunate to see and talk to him at several of the local Pontiac events held at the Pontiac World Headquarters and the related parking lot.

Mac was an extremely smart man and one of my bosses (at my job) eventually came out with single overhead cam engines and dual overhead cam engines for our vehicles, based on Mac's work..

Specs on those engines.

Ford 4.6L Engine - Overview
Metric Value
Engine family Modular
Displacement 4.6 liters
Aspiration Atmospheric
Configuration & cylinders V configuration, eight cylinders
Vehicle engine orientation Longitudinal
Valve configuration Single overhead cam (SOHC) / Dual overhead cam (DOHC)
Assembly sites Romeo, Michigan, USA / Windsor, Ontario, Canada
Predecessor Ford small block V8
Successor Ford Coyote engine

So Mac's work followed to Ford where the Cammer engines from Ford were later developed and sold.
Just like Bunkie Knudson left Pontiac/GM and worked for Ford later in his career.

This post is not about Ford so much as honoring Mac for his engineering expertise.
If GM would have only given him the Green Light on the engines.

Tom V.

I was extremely disappointed with what happened with Mac's car and the engine.

Steve Barcak has a couple of Hemi's, or did awhile ago. One in a rail job and the other in a boat, IIRC. He's a member here based out of Arizona and ran Pontiac Heaven.

I envision a big name pontiac guy collector having one of these he quietly keeps tucked away in a gold edged glass case that rotates, in his warehouse sized man cave with 25 cars occasionally smoking a cigar and grinning to himself he has it!

It was discussed here: https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...nd+prix&page=3 but there's probably more information in older posts if you do a search.

Oh wow. I had no idea of the backstory. certainly no dis-respect intended on a collector having it.
