Default #@$%! Fender Bolt

OK so all is going smoothly until... and I'm sure this will sound familiar..... I try to remove the front fender, and the captive nut (or threads perhaps) just forward of the door in the rocker area just spins and makes that crunchy you-know-it's-rusted-out sound. I got it nearly off by using a prybar to apply downward pressure as I unscrewed the bolt, but it's not coming anymore. I really HATE to cut the fender tab around the bolt - anyone have any other solution to getting this bolt out?

I would try drilling the center of the head bolt while holding it with a pair of vicegrip.

This is a very common problem on all GM cars of this vintage. Yes, you may be able to drill through the bolt while holding the head with a Vice Grips or box wrench. On my '64, we had to cut around the bolt hole, install another cage nut, and weld the hole shut in the body.

I cut the head of the bolt off with a Dremel. After that, I was able to remove it from the cage nut that broke out of the cavity. I guess I'll figure out how to get a new cage nut in there later. I'll also add something else I found out - there's no way to get at them from inside the floor vents on either side of the interior.

Dick posted while I was writing this. Looks like I'll be doing what he did to get the cage nuts back in. Dick - any pictures of that procedure would be helpful!

wow,i thought i was the only one dealing with this problem i just drilled mine out yesterday and held a wrench on the bolt kinda hard to get it perfect but once i got that head drilled off the whole rest of the bolt and that clip nut or whatever its called just fell out? its probably not the right way to do it but i sure was happy when it was done! i have been stressing on how to get that off for a couple days!

I cut the bolt last night - wasn't too bad of a deal. Good news for me was the rocker on this side are in good shape... unlike the driver side

Thanks for the replies.

You can buy the bolts from our host or a supplier like Fastenall.

Check both for the cage nuts, I've not bought any of them yet, I've built my own when needed.

I think I saw some on the Ground Up Restorations web site, as well.
