Default Just had Lab pups

Never had pups before. Anything I should do? I kinda feel helpless. I put them in their own box for now until mom is done. So far we have 3.

Get anything that you do not want teeth marks up out of their reach.

Ive been around when my Mom has had a few litters. The mother will take care of them, just do your best to keep the area clean. Remember they are babies, not that much different from human ones, but without diapers to contain things. So if you have them on an old sheet or something, change and wash it regularly.

My lab had 3 litters - 12-10 & 10. she all ways lost the last two. She had all her litters in her kiddie pool. Till their eyes open they really are not going anywhere except to mommys teat. If i remember it was 3-4 weeks till they could get out of the pool. When they did the all went to the downstairs bathroom. As stated previously, keep their area cleaned daily.(they are little POOP Machines) and mommy will take care of the rest. We all ways felt sorry for the runts of the litter so Diana and i would pull the bullies off,and give the runts some feeding time. Plus the runts would get evaporated milk from an eye dropper to help them out. The runts from all three litters were the first dogs to go to new homes.

Especially anything with the consistency of wood. When they start cutting teeth, they'll ruin chair legs before you know it...

Within a few weeks, have them named. Start "playing" with them each by him/her self. Short periods of time. Five or ten minutes at first.

At the point when they stop and look at you when you call their name, that's when you can start the "training", if you're so inclined. "Hear" as in "Come Hear", "Heel", "Stay" and train them to stop on a whistle (like a police whistle). Being able to stop them by the whistle may prevent seeing them run out into the street and getting run over.

One of the most enjoyable times in my life was when I trained my retriever, Jenny (been gone a number of years, now). She was a joy. I learned a lot about dogs being with her. Just like training kids in a way. Only training her didn't take as long...

I bought a buggy whip at the local farmer's co-op. Cut the "tail" off about six inches from the end of the whip. I never had to strike her with it. Just put it in front of her as we walked (teaching her to heel). She would stay behind the whip by my side.

Bought a whistle with lanyard and hung it around my neck.

Choke collar for the leash.

You can use just about anything to teach him/her to retrieve.

If you really get into the training part, I found more than 15 to 20 minutes each session, once in the morning and once in the evening, was just about right for my dog. Any more than that, it was not "fun" for her. Her attention span would go away.

Like humans, some dogs are smarter than others. You'll be able to recognize each one's limits as you go along...Some just won't train well at all.

All dogs live to please their owner(s). Just make your time with them "fun" time.

Anyways, enjoy.

It's been over 20 years, but I still miss mine. Good memories.

Hit the little dude that looks like paperclip. And then a window pops up where you can load attachments. Its a separate window so you may have to allow popups for it.

The runts are most always the best of the litter.
