The yellow ones look like they are almost caramel in color - very cute!

My GSD had 13 4 years ago - all lived. Make sure Momma is well nourished; lotsa yogurt, pedialite etc. Put colored or numbered bands on the pups, weigh them each daily to track growth and issues. Some vets will give a BIG discount if you bring in all the pups for exams and shots.

Yogurt huh? Interesting. She had the last one this morning 12 hours after I thought she shut off the spigot. They should be ready for new homes about a week before Christmas I reckon. When should they get their first shots?

IIRC shots were at 6 weeks, along with exam. I would double check; sometimes yogurt give mom the runs but we were trying to keep her hydrated and electrolyted(?); they were literally sucking her dry.

After two weeks we put them in a big watermelon box - the kind you see at displays at grocery stores, actually needed 2 - high enough they could not get out. Another way is to build a 4' square corral out of a sheet of waferboard or plywood. This will leave you with 2' high walls - Momma can go in/out but no pups. This also allows you to put a tarp under the walls - makes cleaning MUCH easier. If you use 2 sheets you can make it 8' square. Put a divider in about 2' long and 2' away from a wall; this when lined with wood chips creates a privacy screen and draws them in the do their thing and leaves the rest of the area litter free.

[QUOTE=428 78T/A;5477878]Never had pups before. Anything I should do? [\QUOTE]

Yes, get your damn dog fixed before it happens again.

If this was planned, I don't have the words.

It was planned. You know what the letters F.O. mean?

In that case, get yourself fixed as well. The world has too many dogs and too many POS like you contributing to the problem.

Im no expert. We had one litter of Labs 11 years ago when she was 2 and then had her spayed. She's gone, but the pup we kept is 77 in dog years now. Labs are the best breed ever IMO. Three grandsons have laid on/with them, tried to ride them, had their eyes poked and ears pulled and never even a wimper. Don't know what the wife and I will do when Barkley is gone - it was pretty traumatic when the mom had to be put down from cancer two years ago. Some things I recall we did-
I built a welping box as described above and had it in my attached garage. Puppies were born in early September. I used an electric heater outside of the box to keep the garage warm, and there were blankets and papers in the box.I think you will want to get them out of the house because it will get pretty smelly. Mama licks them clean after their business early on but not later. When you take them to the vets for shots, I suggest having the dew claws removed at that time. As soon as they were born, my wife used different color collars made of ribbon and a notebook to keep track of who was who. We used an old baby scale to keep track of weight. Lots of work, but it was a great experience. Our lot was all yellows 7 born live and 1 still born. Have fun and enjoy!

There is no need for that here. The world could certainly use more Labs and GSD's.

Why? So more good dogs can be put down en masse daily in shelters?

The last thing we need is more brainless people breeding their dogs.

Our family dedicates a lot of time, energy and money to animal rescues and we see the devastation breeders cause on a daily basis. If you choose to turn a blind eye and be part of the problem, shame on you.

Sad enough the shelters have 90%+ pit bull mix dogs. Some are great , and we have had many shelter dogs, but only non mixed breed dogs will have to come from a breeder.
Hopefully these lil guys and gals will find good loving homes. It costs us about $65 a month to raise/ maintain a Black Lab till age 14... and thats homemade food, and fish pills and vitamins and thyroid pills.

What the world really needs less of is people who think their opinion has more value than somebody else and because the forum is open they can bully them from behind their keyboard.

Your assumption that this litter somehow compares to the damage done by for profit puppy mills couldn't be further from the truth. The responsible breeding, caring & raising of animals is not the problem here - the irresponsible allowing of animals to breed and the mistreatment of them is what has caused the explosion of kill shelters & mixed breed rescue dogs.

Get down off your soapbox & go after the real problem - not some guy raising a litter from a dog he clearly cares for!

Who says my opinion has more value than somebody else's? He asked for advice - I gave the absolute best advice I could give and I stand by it.

BS - intentionally increasing the supply of dogs absolutely does contribute to the problem. If there comes a time where good dogs are not being put down daily on a wide scale basis I may change my mind. We get purebred dogs in the rescue as well. People surrender or abandon dogs - purebred or not - all of the time. Truly responsible pet owners fix their pets to control the animal population.

I looked for ten months for a female lab with no mix in her and had to drive to the moon to go get her. There is certainly a need around my neck of the woods for purebred labs.

You're wrong about this and many other things about my having pups. It's been on my "bucket list" to have pups during my lifetime.

Personally I think you should go take a long walk with a short rope. I'm sure your relatives have mutual thoughts.

Thank you for once again confirming my suspicions and stereotypes with the exact kind of response (and personal attack) I'd expect from a breeder.
