Back when my wife and I were selling T shirts the guy that owns Nitemare ( I think his name is Darrin) set up a booth next to us, and I had the opportunity to talk to him for the weekend. Really nice guy, and seems to be well versed in Pontiacs, and the idiosyncrasies of the Stratostreak engines. I've kept an eye on his website, and new products he's brought to market since then.

I've not heard any bad press about him, or his products, probably a good guy to support in our hobby........

Thought i would throw this out there, putting the oil pump back into my car.......the dark one in the picture is from butler, the $22 buck harden one.......... the other one in the pic has been in the car since 2010.......this post has me a little worried............which one would you use of the two..............or just get the one from nightmare performance...........for $60 seems like cheap insurance.

I’d get the one from Nightmare, thing I like about is it has C-clip on it, so it can’t pull out of the pump if you need to pull distributor for any reason, or like to move it on tooth to get timing right. It is definitely the Harden one.

This has explained a lot to me. Very interesting to read about the hardness and the effects of 'a hammer' on the shaft. As said previously, I have had the same experience with a melling shaft and, once removed. could very clearly see where the crank counterweight had hit the shaft. This may have been because of improper fitting to begin with but, that would also be the same as a hammer hitting it.

That and they have the sleeve over the pump end on the IA2 one I bought from them. And as mentioned, very good company to deal with.

The pic in #1 looks like the shaft was made of wood!
Pontiac made hardened shafts for 60# and 80# pumps. They had a distinct "barber pole" pattern on the shaft.

Ken, im thinking your talking about the pic in # post............not the post #43 where i have the two shafts together...........the darker one is the bulter hardened one, never used..........the other one is from 2010........still looks like new, no idea on what brand that is, but it looks a little thicker than the bulter one............

Anyways, i ordered the one from nightmare, hopefully to be on the safe side.

the last engine i built i took a small fine rat tail jewelers file and smoothed out the edges in the U'notches on the shaft ends

Yes I like that part too. The one I got with IAII block although harden one, would come off the pump, just playing with Distributor to get it on #1. On engine stand. I Mean even the stock ones had the T.i.T.s on it to keep it from coming up though distributor hole and from coming off the pump.

gtorich: I was giving out some general info , so that if someone pulled a barber pole type from their or they found one used, they would know what they were looking at.

With any shaft it’s a good idea to take the time to apply some painters tape and paint a thin white line down it’s shank so you can check on how much it may be twisting .
