Hurst Hatch question...
Getting the 77 ready to go in for paint....
Looking for some intel on removing hatch frames. Haven't even looked yet......Any thing I should know...before I start? |

I added the Hursts to my 1977 earlier this year. They are held in with a series of aluminum clamps with large Phillips headed machine screws, like 14 each side. Originally, clear silicone was used to seal the frames against the roof. Just note where the clamps were, use caution not to strip the screws. Should be straightforward.

There are thick steel stiffeners added to the roof sandwiched between the roof panels to help rigidity. You will not be removing them, but with the outer aluminum frames removed, you will want to reduce the amount of twisting on the body to prevent damage.

The steel bars are loose when the aluminum clamps are removed, but will not fall out.

In this photo you can see I removed the exterior hatch frame and clamps. The steel reinforcements were left intact, in between the roof skin and inner structure to provide support for the roof as it gets pretty flimsy without the bars.
