If that's all that "trust" has ever cost you, you made a bargain.

Do you still have the VIN? You can check to see if it's registered/titled in Illinois for free.
Go to the Secretary of State's website. http://www.ilsos.gov/regstatus/

Since he has a body shop he can just make an invoice and put a lien on it if you don't pay.. I wouldn't push this guy to far to fast or you will lose..

Other then going over to his buisiness with a bat, I have no idea what else to do then. Call him up and tell him that you are coming to get it.. I am sure you can find someone on the forum with a truck to pick it up for you thats local to him.

Sounds like you need someone local to remind him of his obligation.
I wonder if a repo firm can recover the car if needed.
You might call the Elgin Police non emergency number 847-289-2500 and explain the situation.
got some one in mind

Why not see if you can make a deal to sell the car to someone who is regional to him? You agree to sell them the car if they will go get ("repo") it. Seems like it might get you some money back while letting someone else get a good deal. You could even initiate contact with someone through the forum.

The car won't do you a lot of good if it's in Illinois. You can just end up sending good money after bad for repo fees, storage, transport, etc.

Here's some sage advice I received from my undergraduate law professor. I need to paraphrase as I can not recall the exact wording. "There is never a more important time, than in dealings with friends and family, to have a contract. They are the first ones to abuse your trust."

I wish you luck. Sounds like you have learned a lesson the hardest way and it sounds like you have changed your ways.

As I always say, "if you want it, give me the cash. When I have the money in hand, you can take it but not before it is paid for 100%."

Good luck!

Yes, but he is still under contract and owes the money for the car according to the small claims court. All I want is if anyone from the forum that knows him to remind him of his obligation and pay for what he took from my family and I. I just want anyone that knows him or his location to let me know that information and I will follow up with out telling him how I found him.
