Default Wild Horse Pass Motorsports (Firebird Raceway) closing for good

No more racing at Wild Horse Pass - it will be displaced for a new freeway interchange. I don't know if this means the lake and Bondurant, too, but they all sit awfully close to the 1/4 mile track. I can't imagine there'll be anything left for race fans.

We have a month left for Palm Beach and they should be done. Plans are for a warehouse distribution site.

I'm sorry to hear this, but not surprised. As Bob Dylan said, "The times they are a'changing". One of my last passes there a few years back was my quickest and fastest. I'll be sorry to see it go, though the loss of Speedworld in Phoenix years earlier was an even bigger loss, IMO.

Happening all over. Atlanta Dragway closed and apartments were going to be built there. Now all the soil samples came back and they can't build anything. Just sitting.

Can't build anything?

Sound like the perfect place for a drag strip!

Maybe it can come back like Milan Dragway "came back" in Michigan.

Closing of Valley racetrack could result in more street racing

"I think a lot of young people are going to inevitably go to the street. I mean, with production vehicles continuing to get faster and faster. Everybody wants a GTR, a Tesla, they want to go out and they want to see what it can do," says Kyle Fritz, driver.

25-year-old Kyle Fritz has been racing at Wild Horse Pass since he was fifteen. It's a loss to those who make a life out of this popular family sport and something many racers aren't willing to give up. Instead, some may take their chance on city streets.

"If they close this place, people will have to do that because they are not going to stop. People are not going to stop," says Fritz.

The only other racetrack in Arizona is in Tucson.

RMR in Utah fell to warehouses in 2018. Racing is done for me.

I heard IHRA sold Memphis as well and has a similar future.

Yes, it looks like Pontiac Heaven events, started in Phoenix in 1998, will have to find yet another location to host events for the hobby. Speedworld from 1998-2013. San Diego in 2014 and Wild Horse Pass 2014-2019. Covid put a damper on things, then my health, now this. It is my hope that there will be a new track on the Gila River resv. They have the land, they have fwy frontage and exits and they have the equipment, etc already. Hoping fans and racers will keep attendance strong to encourage a new facility. Trying to think positive as Phoenix is so big and has much drag racing history. We will see.

This is unfortunate news. My 17 y/o son and his buddies went to an event there last night (shutdown showdown) last night and had a blast. I really think we’re on the cusp of new generation of racing enthusiasts.,

For now, a least, it looks as if Tucson Dragway will soon be the only track in the state. It's a nicely laid out physical facility with a long shutdown area. But, there are two problems: (1) it was built on county land and so is 25 miles SE of Tucson and that much further from the Phoenix area and (2) it's at 3075' above sea level and therefore a slower track than the Phoenix-area tracks were (at 1400' maybe?).
