Also if you know of any friends etc. SD455 stories that would be cool to. Even though I did'nt do much street racing I had a few encounters in my 74 SD455 T/A ie. small block camaro at the lights -he floored it--I Booted the throttle-- had him by a few car lengths--GAME OVER.

WE took 3 SD's to the strip the summer of 74.Phils blue auto blk interior no power options, mine blue auto blue interior no power otions,Jeff's red blk interior 4spd no options.I went 14.2 witha lot of wheel spin.I don't remember their times.I have Jeff's block in the cellar and his scoop ion the race car.(Jeff has past away).I was driving to my buddies house Friday night to go to Norwalk. The car was loaded with clothes and cleaning stuff.A guy in a Corvette was playing around at a light giving me the business,so I waved him on,I put 3 cars on him going to 2nd gear. The only car I lost to was a 65 427 425 4spd vette on the street.I'ved raced 396 454Chevlles,289 highpos, late model vettes.I don't know what they had,the races were always impromtu. The car is factory stock.Yes I know I could improve the performance with simple mods.I have evrything to do these mods still in the boxes.Cam,a copy of the 73 310 hp cam on the SD billet, springs, rockers, blueprinted heads,72alum intake.

Great story sdbob -- before I bought the 74 SD455 T/A -I saw it running mid to low 13's at our local track and at that time it had headers and a few other tricks. The owner then put in a 3500 stall- race prepared turbo 400 trans--high lift HO RACING cam--Torker intake - 3.55 12 bolt etc. . He mentioned that he would beat his friends done up 70 LS6 Chevelle 4 spd car by an average of 3 car lengths. Wish I never the sold the SD--but thats hindsight.

Default Here's a street story encounter with an SD..........

This was in the early 1980's. One Saturday night while cruising around in my 72 GTO (400, Crane Cam, headers, shift kit, 4.33 gears, etc). I came up behind a white with blue decal ’74 Bird thinking “another low compression 400 T/A, lets see if he’ll run". He was driving around 25 mph. As I began to steer along side of T/A to pass, I dropped the GTO into 1st, punched it, shifted into 2nd and laid a nice second gear chirp along side of T/A. I then slowed up and waited for T/A to come up beside me. As the T/A approached, we got side by side at 10 mph, throttled and jumped our front ends up and down about two times. As we steadied at a 10mph roll, he nodded at me and we both hit it. The T/A instantly jumped me by 1/2 car length, by the time I was into 3rd my 400 was running out of breath and the T/A was 2 car lengths ahead and gone. When I got to the next stop light, the T/A was waiting for me and as I pulled up alongside of the car I read “455 SD” on the shaker. I gave the T/A driver a thumbs up and he gave me a great big smile back.

Smile SD stories

I was at 1000 or so miles on my 74 SD's engine rebuild and was going towards my house when I saw a fairly nice Pantera ahead of me...I finally went thru traffic til I was next to him...clear in front of us..we both got into it at the same time..at 80 or so we were side by side..I looked over and did a little wave and pushed the throttle all the way to the floor..the SD was pulling him pretty good and I didnt back out until 130 or so (3.08 gears)...GREAT feeling..another time I pulled up to a light and noticed a 1985 and up TPI vette next to me..he did his little goosing of the throttle..so I switched my left foot to the brake and slowly brought the revs up til the light went green...poor guy I left him like he went into reverse!!!..I waited at the next light and he wouldnt pull all the way up next to me....I can hardly wait until spring!!!

Great stories--when I owned mine a fellow who had a 73 SD455 T/A wanted to buy mine--he also mentioned he got a Speeding ticket for 153 mph and he still had some top end left. This was in the early 80's--don't know if he had any mods done--rear gears etc. I Heard the 74 SD455 Cannonball T/A hit 170 mph with I Think 2.70 gears.
