Based on the plug fitting, you are just a circuit board, tach, tubes, and bulb sockets away from your goal. Lol

I'd wager that most wouldn't notice the 77-78 tach in there, and suggest that if a donor cluster without a tach is sourced, that the tach that is there just be used.

Back in the day the first thing we would look at in an interesting car was the tach redline.
Following from memory so correction appreciated. Pontiac V8s mostly had a 5200 redline, OHC-6 was higher (230 was higher than a 250). Synapse is firing about a higher redline for a RA II (5500) and SD (5750). 303 and RA V prolly higher also but never in a production car. Late emissions cars were redlined below 5k (4850 ?) I do not know of any US Pontiac that relined at 5k (Some Canadians had Chevvies). Have no idea what the one is the cluster is from. Under the blue cover should be a round ceramic circuit board. If the capacitor is a .33 than it is for a V8. Sorry accidentally posted in rong thread. |

For the second generation Firebird, the tach was wholly model year dependant;
There was no variance in the tach based on drivetrain. There were three styles, and two variants; 1) 1970-1976 (8k rpm max); 1970/1971 only had provisions for signal from a points distributor, while 72-76 had provisions for use with points or HEI/Unitized 2) 1977-1979 (6k rpm max); the 1979 variant had "QUARTZ" printed on the tach face above the clock opening 3) 1980/1981 (6k rpm max) I could be wrong, but do not think you could get gauges with a tach if you had the inline six - which meant they were all calibrated for the V8.

I recently owned one- an Admiralty Blue 1973 Formula 455 with the dreaded column shift, but had Rally gauges with tach.

New circuit board is on the way.
You just wonder about people sometimes. Not only did the previous owner gut the housing and drop in an incorrect tach, he pulled the male plugs off the back of the fuel and volt gauges. I guess he had a thing against factory plugs. I guess I need to revisit the PHS on this car to see if it was a factory gauge car or not. |
