Default Points, pertronix, or HEI?

Sorry if this post has been hashed to death. I just got my dream car, a 1970 Lemans with a 400, and I'm trying to decide if I should leave the ignition system alone (stock), going with a pertronix system under the stock cap, or a HEI.

I would go HEI, but I was concerned about the larger cap and coil fitting under the Dual snorkel air cleaner. Is that a problem anyone has experienced?

I'm only going to be driving the car a few hundred miles a year, so I'm tempted to just leave the points intact and check the gap every few years. But It seems all the advice I'm getting is to dump the points.

I'd like to hear some fresh opinions and advice

points...dead reliable need maintenance...on the side of the road, you can probably get home with just a touch of work..yearly check up mandatory...uses a resister wire out of the fuse block...they have issues with age

buy genuine a/c delco, old borg warner, or MSD stuff...buy stuff for a 69 Z28... better stuff

hei..dead reliable..good to 5000-ish rpms..when i dies..its dead...a little work on most air cleaners needed..need 12 volts all the time..so you have to run a wire out of your fuse block

buy DUI stuff....cheap and reliable...a/c delco cap is about 75 bux now...crazy...

pertronix...people rave about them..never used one..never intend to....but when dead..its dead...

Thanks for the input. I was leaning toward keeping what I have assuming it's in working condition.

I have a bogging problem at the moment. If the carb doesn't wind up being the problem, I'll look at the Dizzy next

HEI is my favorite. It is a proven reliable way to upgrade your ignition. No problem with the dual snorkel on my '70

points.
I have changed my share of hei modules on the roadside.
I once had an ACCEL points eliminator in there and I guess it worked ok but I didn't trust it; and went back to points.
Gotta buy a few sets to get one good set but that one good set will last for years.
Gotta buy the ones with the separate condenser.
you can usually make it home with points.
Just my opinion.

Petronix. Had this in my 66 Beaumont for 5 years,no problem whatsoever and kept points in glovebox in case of emergency. Just converted the goat to petronix two weeks ago, I like the no maintenance aspect

1971 TA factory distributor with pertronix in it. It seemed to run better and haven't touched it in 15 years. Still running 7 volt wire.

Default Lectric Limited Inc.

Lectric Limited, as far as I am concerned, the best, most OEM looking Breakerless Ignition on the market. I have their ignition on both my 1968 Camaro and also the 1971 LeMans Sport
May want to give them a call...

One thing to keep in mind with any version of a modern electronic distributor or transistorized ignition conversion kit is if you have a factory tach that has just one wire from the back of the tach to the "-" side of the coil, the modern ignition upgrade will disable your tachometer. The signal from the conversion kit is different than the pure square wave of the opening and closing of a set of points.
If you want your tach to work: The tachometer will need the circuit board replaced as well as an additional wire added that runs from the back of the tach over to the fuse block. The new wire gives the tach 12 volts of "+" battery power whenever the key is in the on or run position, which is used to power the tach. I am sure that the makers of these ignition system(s) are fully aware of this but it is something that you never see in their advertising.

My Pertronix 2 just failed after three months. Really disappointed, and I emailed them Friday and haven't heard back from them.

Did you use to Flame thrower II coil. I have heard you can't mix the original flame thrower coil and #2 together. I have mine for the last 4 years and the only I hate is I had to run a 20 degree limiter in mine It was throwing 28 degrees in to the total timing. With 12 degree initial, it was giving me 40 degrees total timing.
