Clearance from oil pan to frame crossmember?
Im just curious how much clearance there is supposed to be from the frame to the oil pan. Mine is close, like you cant easily see any space. At the curve where the sump begins. I don't think its touching. But its close enough that it makes me nervous. So Im just wondering if everyones is super close with this model of if mine isn't normal.
Im using an aftermarket pain with a baffle but I think its supposed to be stock dimensions. I will try to get a picture in a day or so.

I have found the issue on the first gens is the motor mounts!I have had to raise my engine about 1/8 inch on both sides to give the pan clearance.I just used U shaped alu spacers I could loosen the single bolts, jack the engine up some and slide them in.Tom

Same here, but I used 1/8 steel and drilled a hole. Good idea about the U-shaped spacer though.

Yeah I suspected that was going to be the plan. I wonder if I have any body shims left around. I could probably widen the slot a little. When I get home Im going to try to clean the space of any grit and use a flashlight to see if I can see light through the hole. If I cant make that work then I guess Ill just try and put a spacer in between.
Whats the safest method to raise the motor? Loosen the mounts and then put a wood block under the pan between the jack? If I only need a 1/4 can I get by without loosening the transmission mount?

You can easily lift it from the oil pan with a block of wood on a floor jack.

I did not touch the trans X member. You might check into the shims used in front end alignment if the slot is wide enough for the bolt.Tom

Copy. I was just under mine. I have a sliver of light on the driver side and none on the passenger. Tomorrow I’ll try and jack up the motor to try and shim it up some.

I actually just came back inside. I glued two washers together and cut a slot in them. Did that for a pair of spacers. Put one on each side. It’s still close. But I have maybe an 1/8th of clearance now. I slid a piece of paper all the way through front to back so I know it isn’t touching anywhere.
The biggest problem I think it’s the mounts want to slide all the way to the bottom of the slot in the frame mount that the bolt goes through. If I could get them both in the middle it might be better. Was hard to do it by myself. If I had someone operating the jack while I was under I could have done better. But if it got much higher my header might hit the steering gear. Like I said, it’s clearly not contacting anywhere now. So I feel safer.

Add another spacer guy to the list... my 7qt miloden pan was on the verge of touching with new aftermarket mounts. Made a couple spacers about 3/16 thick. Looks good now.

Im considering adding urethane mounts in the near future so I don't have to bother with a tie down on the driver side. If I do that I will either add another spacer or try to get it a little higher in the adjustable slot. For now its clearly not touching, and Im fine with it.

Firebird Central is selling a motor mount with the correct height. I put them in a few months ago. FIrst time in 30 years that the engine fan is centered in the fan shroud....

You can use paper to slip between the oil pan and cross member. Slip the paper through and if id does, fold it in half and slip through again. Keep folding until it does not slip through. Then go back to the last one that did and measure it. That will give you a good idea what gap it has. I also had problems with new motor mounts they sell today. Mine came from Napa. It was seating to low. I found a set of New OLD replacement Stock (NORS) and it made a huge difference. Motor sits correct now.

Zombie thread. I would be curious to know for sure correct height mounts myself.
Honestly I have always assumed the frame mounts probably sag overtime. I figured they were the cause, not the motor mounts.

I ordered the poly engine mounts from Butler as my oil pan is nearly touching the x-member as well. I'll report back once installed...

I have Butler poly mounts and used 1/8" thick Al spacers on each side.
