Default Battery relocation to the trunk inquiry

With the ignition problem solved one of the next tasks is to relocate the battery to the trunk, has anyone on here done this on a 73-77 A-Body and if so can you offer any insight?

I have the cables, have the battery box for the trunk, however I am kind of struggling with the placement of the box. Ideally I would like to put the box on the passenger side of the trunk however I am afraid that the trunk hinges will make getting the battery in and out of the box a challenge! I do not want to put it in the middle of the trunk as it takes up pretty much the useable space.
(There is a chance that the box that I bought is larger than what I need!)

Also if you have relocated the battery are you running a lead acid battery or are you using a dry cell?

Any help, .....would be helpful!

Ive done the battery thing. If you move it over to the edge of the trunk floor, basically over the frame rail, it'll leave you room for trunk operation and space.

My remote solenoid is right below it, on the underside of the trunk, mounted to the frame. Its also where I ground the battery and the solenoid. The solenoid back here ensures the large cable feeding the starter is only hot when cranking the engine over.

If you get style box like the Taylor seen here, you can remove the sides and get the battery in w/o having to heave it over the box. I ran the plastic box for a while, but this is by far much easier to work with IMO.

Ive always run an Optima battery, but see no reason a lead acid cant work just as well.

My advice would be to oversize the cables running to and from the battery, especially any charging wire from the alternator. You'll be surprised how much voltage is lost over the run back from the engine. I recommend a 2GA wire from the alternator. Also, run grommets in every place a cable will run through metal.

73 LeMans,

Thank you for your reply and the photos, you have a very sanitary installation there!

Let me look into my box as I can tell you just from the visual in your photo and seeing the battery hold down, the box that I have is much larger.

Get an XS Power AGM battery. Their S925 or D925 is rather tiny, light (24#), and WAY more powerful than you'd expect. No worries about hydrogen gas build up either, since it is an AGM style.

Thank Lee for the information, we will research that!

I see that you are located in the Houston area, are you involved in any Pontiac Car Clubs in the area?

I was pretty active, and still good friends with, the HALF guys. That started as a 1st gen Firebird club, but evolved into being a group of car guys who like each other, most of whom have owned a 1st gen at some point :-)

I'm more of a performance guy, than a car show guy.

I'll send you a message.

I have mine in about the same place as 73LeMans. Look underneath before drilling mounting holes. There's a brace that's in the perfect spot to make getting a nut on the bolt a real XXXXX. Just another instance where burning it to the ground seemed like the only option. I'm using an AGM Braille battery, 18 pounds, I've had it for around 8 years or so.
