Aluminum rods and a 4 speed
Recently purchased 462 aluminum rod engine from torqued on this board .Was wondering about flywheel weight, since it'll be going 4 speed in my 3000lb coupe .Any input would be appreciated thanks

Not sure what your question is?Wheels are made in alu and steel.I have run both, the steel ones seem to last better in my cars.Tom

Concerned with rpm falling off to quickly when launching car ,never had a set of aluminum rods before, hope I'm explaining myself

Your in the street forums so I can only comment on that.I ran a alu flywheel for years in my 62 GP.My rear gear is 2.68 and my ST-10 is a 3.42 first gear.NEVER had a issue with street driving. When I pulled the 389 out to put the 421 in I found a lot of heat checking in the insert in the alu flywheel so just put a brand new steel McLeod in it.I see no diff in everyday driving between the two.FWIW,Tom

Yes I know I'm in the street forum ,my car is just a big toy gets drove like drag car Lol so you think just go with a 30lbs steel flywheel and forget it

The only difference should be the aluminum flywheel red faster and sheds rpm slower. I would run steel on the street

With your big cid motor you will not find much difference between both flywheels, but if you had a 400 cid or under with about your same car weight you would!
The heat checking needs to be kept tabs on with a non steel flywheel. By way a Aluminum flywheel also decelerates faster, as in mass in motion tends to stay in motion!

I've had an aluminum flywheel in my 78 TA 462" for over 20 years, 20,xxx miles. NO problem.

I want to see more pictures of that car!! I'm thinking about aluminum flywheel on one of my 69's because it want it to launch softer and spin up a little faster coming out of turns. Is that correct thinking?

might want to go with a fly wheel. Would amagine the rotating weight is lite So you might want to go with a allum fly wheel. I believe that's what you were wondering? GT. |

I have run aluminum flywheels for over 50 years and with a 2.56 highway gear (normal everyday gear was a 4.33 gear) never really saw a drive issue. Obviously the launch was softer with the aluminum wheel and the 2.56 gear but I was not drag racing with that gear. I was going on trips with that gear.
I plan on running a aluminum flywheel with the Nash 5 speed (again) but with a 2.75 gear 9" Ford axle the next time the car goes on the road. Nash has 3.27 first gear. Street you should be fine, drag it might help with not blowing the tires off the car on launch as easily. Tom V. Mark Schottler ran BILL MILLER aluminum rods on the street with his 421 SD Engine for years and years. No issues. Some aluminum rod makers have it figured out, Bill Miller being one.

Only ever ran Aluminum rods with an Aluminum flywheel on the street with a SBC and was not happy with it. Now that was a roller cam, and dual quads. 4 speed 57 Chevy. Replaced the Aluminum flywheel with a steel flywheel and it was great. The difference in weight between an Aluminum flywheel and a steel flywheel is much greater than the weight difference between Aluminum rods and steel rods. Also with the rods 2/3 of their weight is rotation but at a much smaller radius than the flywheel weight so their MOI is much less overall to the total verses the flywheel. I would see no problems from the rods while the flywheel maybe a different story.
