Default Newbies racing at Norwalk

So my buddy and are bringing his 70 lemans. We will probably pull into linders lot early evening on Thursday. I think they let you in the pits in the morning? Do they allow antifreeze in the cars? Were teetering around the roll bar rule, if he runs an 11.49 will they kick us off? Any tips for some Norwalk racing rookies?

I believe on Thursday they start letting people into the track around 3 to get setup. If you show up late enough on Thursday they may have you wait in Linder's lot overnight. I'm not sure what time that is as I'm always there Thursday morning. They may tell you to slow it down if you go faster then the roll bar rule but I don't think you will be kicked out. I have raced my street car with antifreeze in the past with no problem. As far as a tip I would say make sure you have a way to get around other then just walking. Hope this helps.

Anti freeze is fine provided you're not "puking" it out in staging or on the track.

Make a flat out pass to see where the car is at. IF you are quicker than 11.49 you can make changes to slow it down to be legal. Every 100 pounds kills apprx a tenth. Retarding the timing will take some out of it as well. So will short-shifting.

I did all three depending on the weather and where the car was at. It's hot/humid here in Ohio in August so the car will be at it's slowest or close to it anyhow. The best option is adding weight. Weight in the trunk slows the car and makes it hook better so more consistent. I used to add 200 pounds to the trunk, retard the timing to 26 degrees total and short shift at 5000rpm's vs 5800. Typically that would take the car from low 11's to 11.50-11.70. The car hooked solid and it kept the track officials from visiting the pit sight and giving me a warning.

Below is a run at Norwalk doing with weight added, timing retarded and shifting at 5000rpm's......

There is a lot ,to see, experience take in. As Todd said you should have wheels, golf cart, etc to get around. Hone your reaction times, later rounds are tuff. Lots of nice people, most of all have fun,oh get your ice cream before its gone!

You will have a BLAST!

I have been racing there on & off since 1978, lots has changed from back then when it was grass, gravel & mud! LOL

In the old days a "catch can" was required but that may have changed. I have not paid much attention to rules changes in the last decade as the only thing I run is just a one pass blast to see how it runs.

I should be there all weekend (as I only live 13 miles from the track) with my 64 GP if I get it done in time...Hopefully!

God bless
Bill

They always check us for dated seatbelts and helmets. Neutral safety switch a "must".

Yes for helmet date. I use stock seat belts 12 second range. I remember 'old' tower, getting up next to starting line for pictures of wheelstands esp altered wheelbase 63 Lemans and Arnie s backups.
