Default 1956 Pontiac

Here's my latest Pontiac I just picked up. I got this from a guy who has had it close to 30 years and took some of it apart to do a restoration and that's how it has sat the last 20 years.

All original drivetrain that may be salvagable. Plans are to see if the engine is still good and get it up and running. It needs the floors redone which is not to bad I made them for my 55. It also comes with rechromed bumpers which may or may not end up on this car if run out of time and just sell it lol.
I'd just leave the body alone mostly and just have a nice cruiser. I'll have to rob the glass and a few parts from my 55 pile to put it togeether

Hey Bill, if you need any parts I'am doing a 56 Safari and I have quite a few parts that will be for sale, a completely rebuilt hydra-matic, power steering box with column, power steering pump, starter, and a complete front suspension clip that has all the king pin items and all of the brake and steering assembly if you know of anyone interested in these items, I could post some photos, also have a 57 347 motor.

tlkelly- is the rebuilt HydraMatic a Dual-Range or a Dual-Coupling?

Hi Jack I'am not sure is there a way to tell? I know it was in my 56 Safari when I got it and it has been rebuilt, I had given it away once, but they had it's a long story on how I got it back all rebuilt.

"Park" position on gear selector is Dual Coupling.
No "Park" is Dual Range.

Hewlett Packard sucks. It's a private joke for any one who has worked at that fecal hole.

tkelly- Early '56 Pontiacs had the Dual-Range, later ones the Dual-Coupling; that's why I need to ask which it is.

Thanks Bill. Jack I will check this afternoon to be honest I forgot what the shift lever says, when I got the car way back when it was not drivable, the front nose cone had been crushed when they put the 347 motor in, so the tranny was not operable, like said long story on how I got it back.

Jack this 56 has the dual coupling , I know your looking for dual range stuff. Everything driveline related engine/trans will be available from this car. Eventually it will be getting a straight axle and newer style engine to go along with it.

Not quite... Excluding stick-shift... All '56 Star Chiefs, including Safari had Dual-Coupling Hydramatic. Most Chieftains had Dual-Range, some had Dual-Coupling.

Thanks Larry for reminding me of the details. I was just trying to point out to tkelly that a '56 could be either HydraMatic.

Bill- glad to hear that his '56 will get put to good use, like your drag car is.

I'm not really shopping for a Dual-Range; I just like to keep an eye on where they are. The "modernized" Tri-Power '58 engine in my GMC is making so much power that I'm not 100% confident my Hydro-Stick (50+ year old Hydromotive "unblown competition" design) will survive. My first attempts at a banzai launch showed up the faulty design of my rear axle torque arm, and I've yet to try a "full pass" since re-doing the torque arm. [Cutting the coupling for 3,200 RPM stall turned it into a beast off the line]

Thanks for checking. I'm not looking for a dual-coupling. But there's a good chance that someone else is looking for a freshly rebuilt one.

Hey Larry,

Did you know that all Pontiac's 1952 to 64 with column shift HydraMatic, Dual Range, Dual Coupling, and Roto are all dual range. All have Drive left and drive rt. or 'DR'.
A tidbit: Roto is considered a Four range three speed Hydra-Matic.

Good point Don. Yes, I did know most of that (not too knowledgeable about the "modern" post-1960 models). The terminology gets a little confusing. I use the terminology that PMD used, "Dual-Range Hydra Matic" for the 1952-56 design, see http://www.pontiacsafari.com/Hydrama...ange/index.htm. To distinguish the new-for-56 design, PMD called it "Strato-Flight Hydra-Matic" (http://www.pontiacsafari.com/Hydramatic/1957/index.htm) or "Controlled Coupling" in the Master Parts Catalog. Other documentation call it "Dual Coupling" which seems to be the preferred terminology in this forum.
