Bob,

You sound like my dad describing a fire support mission the Missouri did while his firebase was under fire during Korea. "Sounded like a freight train going over..."

Ahhh, but the South Dakoda class can turn in a much tighter radious than an Iowa. And still has the same firepower.

Did the USN ever repair the extensive damage the Iowa received from the gun turret accident?

I toured the NJ earlier this summer, it was awesome. The mix of really old technology with just old tech is something to see. It's ashame that the funds are not available to keep it in better condition. Went into the number two turret as well as the rest of the ship.

Glad you were able to visit the New Jersey! I visited her in 2004. While aboard her though, the ships across the river really caught my interest but, was not able to go there on that trip.
So, in 2007 while on the road trip in my '72 GTO, I visited the USS Olympia across from the New Jersey. IT is the oldest steel/iron warship afloat and fought in the Spanish/American war in the 1890s. I believe this is a 5" mount

What was really cool though was being able to 'sight in ' the New Jersey while on the Olympia! If you get a chance to visit the Olympia, you will like it.

A few more BB pics if no one minds...

BB64 in Norfolk, 2007. IMO, this is the best displayed of all the Iowas on the mainland.

Me and my 'glass nosed '70 455 GTO and the USS Alabama BB60 - Mobile. Oct 1993 while on my first 10,500 mile road trip all around North America.

Getting ready to board the New Jersey BB62 - March 2004

another

Here is the new Jersey again but, from across the river. It is kinda hard to see but, it is there behind my '72 GTO 455HO in the foreground. This was during a 7 week long road trip of just under 11,000 miles in Sept, Oct and Nov 2007. Gosh I want to hit the road again! It is sooo much fun.

I toured the USS North Carolina years ago. It took several hours to tour the complete ship. Very high tech for its time. Got to sit inthe main gun turret and actually look through the veiwing glass and see pictures hanging on a building wall a few miles away.

Yes, I agree! I love the North Carolina as well. It probably is my favorite BB museum of all. I walked through the ship with my little 8mm cam corder in 1993. I remember there were many buttons you could push that would narrate the area you were in and I can still remember how his voice sounds after all these years. It is past time to revisit her again.

That sure looks different from when I first visited there in Nov 1997.
Looks like the souvenier building has not started construction yet.

That's just main battery fire.

When I was in VN in '68, it was fun to sit up in the radio shack and listen to the ANGLICO officer ashore call in a barrage.

"November echo papa papa, this is Basketball, fire mission, over."

"Roger, Basketball. Authenticate Delta Echo."

"Bravo whiskey. Map coordinates __________."

"Roger Bravo whiskey, we're in range, 19 miles, time of flight 32 seconds. Stand by for spotting round....shot out."

"Impact, add 200, left 25, load ham and eggs, fire for effect."

"Basketball, shot out. Time of flight 28 seconds."

"November echo papa papa, Basketball, on target, cease fire, target destroyed."

Roger, Basketball, cease fire. Permission to clear guns?"

"Roger clear guns."

Man, I wish I'd taped some of that.

Default BB-55 USS North Carolina

If you havent seen the USS North Carolina at Wilmington, NC in awhile she is well worth the visit. Living up to her knickname "Showboat", her new WW2 combat paint scheme is simply stunning. Her Kingfisher floatplane is also one of only 4 survivors in the US. I liked the kill board.

My Gosh, I would almost give up a testicle to experience 16' shells flying over me, esp at night. HAS to be awesome!
In the late summers here in the Phoenix area is when we get a lot of storms with lightning. Later at night when it is real dark and there is lightning flashing over the horizon, I fantasize that was must it be like to see BB's firing at night at a distance.

Going by memory. I think it was the USS Kearsarge. It later became a salvage ship with a huge crane. I think it lasted into the 20's, maybe early 30's?

I was on the USS Savanah AOR4 it was an oiler . I was there during V.N. I got to see it for the last time on the NAT GEO channel while they were cutting it up with some really big cutter. Hated to see it go that way. It was a pretty good ship.

Amazing pieces of engineering designed & built well before the age of computers and robot welders.
