yep, choke heat shield, mounts to the intake right in from of the choke housing, deflects what can be cold air from the fan at first start up so the choke can heat up faster & pull off. Its used on all T/A engines of this era from what Ive seen, not just W72.

My TA did not come with one. Mine is the lower compression. Engine.
I've only seen a couple of these parts, in pictures. Here...

They started in 78. Hub isnt tapped in 77.
Looks like a swap meet part.

Pretty rare part. I had to get mine off eBay because it was missing from my engine.

Like everyone has been saying, it's just a metal shield that bolts to the raised boss on the intake in front of the choke housing to shield it from cold air from the fan on startup, so that it warms up quicker.

I don't believe it is just a W72 part though. Both of my 78's have them. W72 & L78

Never really knew its purpose either, so very interesting topic!

GM #10003937

Manual says all 400 models in 1978.
Not listed for 1979.

Choke shield returns in 1980 for Turbo 301 (different version), I believe that may have also been the start of the electric choke setup, brought about also due to relocated carb arrangement.

79 had, they were 78 engines.
You can find them, the bolt is the rare part. You never see the bolt. I see the shields at the swaps.

Look at the last few post of the thread " I've got a stripper in the garage " You will see just how and where it mounts.
