Default Ram Air III distributor

Hi guys, Posted this first over in the Steet section but I guess they think some of us are nuts trying to get the correct parts and date codes for our cars. They may be right...
Just bought a 1112009 distributor for my 70 Judge, Ram Air III auto. Date on the distributor is 9J17. Is this September 17, 1969 or October 17, 1969? Or neither?
Thanks, Jimmy

I seem to recall reading that "I" was not used in stamped date coding - which makes or breaks your date coding;
I did a quick google search and came up with THIS link;
I would suggest you scroll down to the section entitled "GM Date Code Formats" - as you might find your answer there...

Or maybe someone more versed could chime in

I sold my '2009 distributor many moons ago... which is why I opened this thread

A 1112009 with a date code of 9J17?!?

Most electrical parts skipped the I so it wouldn't be confused with a 1. So the date code in question implies it was assembled on Sept. 17, 1969.

I thought they only skipped I for the '67 model year. Then returned to the standard A-L date code since the first digit was always a letter and no need to continue to eliminate the I.

I have never seen a 9Mxx dated distributor. Has anyone else? If so, that would confirm HFR's post.

I would say the part in question here is Oct 17, 1969.

And I don't think those were one of the date assemblies for a 1112009 distributor.

Iron castings for sure John, not sure if it was other parts as well.

All of the 1970 RA distributors I have seen were dated July 1969..from memory, but seems like G7 G9 were the common dates.. at the end of the day.. really doesn't matter though.. it is a part that no one will ever see the date stamp once installed in the engine.. very few if any still have their original calibrations.. personally, I wouldn't worry about the date. as long as it is before the cars build date,you should be fine..

Bill, one should care if they spent several hundred for what they perceive is an original, only to find it was a restamped unit (low dollar core with incorrect specs left as is).

Agreed, both my RA III and RA IV distributors are July '69 stamped. One was VERY expensive, bought from Lance, you guess which one...

On another note, I've tried to find the thread where folks on here were concerned with Flagged numbers on a 1112010 and it was expressed here that the first three digits were three digits when "flagged" were NOT original, but in fact for a date code of July 21 69, the flagged numbers are correct... My Judge has the flagged first three numbers as well as the in 2010. Have purchased another distirbutor as a spare with the same date code and first three numbers flagged, and have seen jsites resto with pics on this site with the same combo. All have the lines machined around the OD of the distributor.

Is this guide I have been reading incorrect? It says that my WS motor is supposed to have a 1111952 but also shows that same dizzy for the standard 400 350 HP?

Looks like thats for 69. I believe your 70 would have #12 heads and 1112010 or 1112024 distributor depending on the build date.

HFR I agree with you on the "paid for original" comment. I was just pointing out the fact that we all try to get the perfect dates,numbers etc.. when many of these parts will never be seen again once installed. good example is the starter, Pontiac stamping is facing the engine block when installed, never gets seen. distributors are similar depending how it is clocked once installed. But yes, if purchased at an original RA price, I'd be pissed to find out it is a restamp. And that date is one I have never seen like you pointed out. I wasn't there in 1969, but from what I have seen July was the month the majority if not all of the 1970 RA distributors were stamped..

Guys, thanks for all of your input on this deal. I bought the unit from a fellow forum member here. Before buying it, I sent all of the photos to Sun Tuned for his thoughts. Since purchasing it, I have sent it to Bob (Sun Tuned) to go through the unit to make sure any issues are resolved before putting it in the car. Might be a restamp, but Bob said it looked like the real deal to him from the photos. Thanks, Jimmy

the 1970 model year part number is the other '2009 number, that list (correct or not) appears to be for the 1969 model year;
all parts predate the build of the car, oftem by months, depending on how big the batches/runs are of that particular part. - just a small fact that some people forget
