That shirt design has been around a long time, I believe I remember seeing it in the mid 70s.

Are you sure it's a 71 BJ?! I see recessed grills, cross hairs in the parking lights, white GTO lettering on the rear quarter, and one could argue, a fender vent too...
I'm still trying to decide if that's lucerne blue, or Adriatic .....

Wow, you guys must be yung 'uns!! These shirts were all over the place back in the 1970's. You can see ads for these in many of the magazines like Hot Rod, Car Craft, PHR, etc. from back then too. They were iron-on transfers, and along with Peter Frampton, Fleetwood Mac, and the ever popular "Keep On Truckin'", I knew many kids that had these back in the day. I used to have a 68 Firebird t-shirt in this style, along with a 70-73 Trans Am shirt, and my favorite, Led Zeppelin on stage, circa 1973. The rubber transfers looked great for about a month, then started to deteriorate with a few washings.
They went along well with those "Zingers" models, which had a stock body but out of proportion huge tires, giant blower, and sometimes a hand coming out of the roof grabbing a shifter. The good ol days! Here's a few of the vintage ones. http://www.etsy.com/listing/11839693...ce-cars-trucks

Greg, I did too! In fact, one of my first projects in some class I had (I think it may have been Home Economics) was to make a silk screen on a shirt. Before the days of digital pics and the web, you had to draw something, then turn it into a silk screen. I took a photo from a magazine that had a nice shot of The Judge logo, and drew my own. For my follow up, I traced one of those rubber transfers of a 1965 GTO (same pop art style as the others, straight axle, huge tires, flames coming from the headers, etc) and made a few changes, then made my own transfer.
The other kids made puppies and kitties. I made muscle car stuff. I was the weird one. These were the Zingers, which they also made plastic models of. Very popular back then.

Yeah, I had a couple of those models too. I seem to recall my models being something other than the Zingers. They were more like the Ed Roth drawings...You know, wrinkled oversize tires, distorted, curved, lunging body lines and some bug-eyed character sticking up out of the roof with a gearshift in his hand.

I used to get packs of bubble gum with cards (like baseball cards) that had those drawings on them. Got like one big stick of gum and three cards to a pack and they cost 5 cents.
Pat - I think you are right - that does look like a 72! BJ

I remember the Odd Rods stickers. I still have a few. I'll try to post some pics. We even had a couple of the CarToons mags. Wish I had kept them.

http://roach-studios.com/product/pon...ebird-t-shirt/ The T-shirt in question was silkscreened using RoAcH's old artwork, which was a transfer back in the day. But, I'm sure she didn't pay that price (she won't tell me where or how much). Other transfers were Rat's Hole (I don't know if it was linked to Ed "Rat Fink" Roth or not). I was also thinking '72 because of the ducktail back. My wife's mom owned a T-shirt and Jeans business back in the '70s. Which is another reason the wife found it cool. |
